So there I was, I just helped the Bastion destroy the jump node. I jump out to assist the ships fleeing Capella.. As I jump in to the system, there is this Colossus parked in front of me, in the process of exploding..
I managed to survive the blast, but this huge piece of debris smacked into me and killed me...
hmmph...
wierd....

Possible explanations are corrupted mission file, corrupted .vp file, computer system hiccup, Random Rubbish, illicit use of a controlled substance, you we're dreaming, etc...

No, really, that is strange.  I have had an Orion-class destroyer enter subspace backward before, however, so I guess a Colossus materializing how of nowhere is equally as possible.

hmmm, doesnt that mission take place in the same place that the Colossus was destroyed?
Maybe   put it in and checked the Destroy Before Mission tag and for some reason it didnt blow up before the mission started....

Sorry for my poorly written reply up there; I never type nor speak very coherently after having been up for nineteen hours strait, but I'm okay.

I've got a new theory on it now.  I know that in the Bastion escort mission there are three fighter killers providing additional fire support.  I also know that in the next mission, the last one of the game, all three are supposed to be there with the "Red Alert Status" box checked in the Misc. Options.  I also know that two of the three fighter killer cruisers (aka GTC Aeolus...sorry) are set to be Destroyed 0 seconds before the mission.  Alpha, Beta, and Gamma wings are all set for Red Alert Status as well, meaning they carry over from one mission to the next with their current hull integrity/ammunition statistics.  So it's possible that if the ships.tbl file got messed around with in such a way that a Colossus replaced the Aeolus or one of the fighters in Alpha, Beta, or Gamma (the mission file itself would have to be messed up in this case) it could cause the big ship to explode as it did.  It's just a ragged theory I put together at 1213 in the morning, so now it's everybody's turn to poke lots of holes in it.

I think the mission where the Colossus is destroyed is spent near the Capella/Gamma D. jump node, whereas the last mission takes place in the space surrounding the Capella/Vega jump node, so I believe they're two different places.  My facts and trivia on this matter are quite rusty, so I dunno how accurate all the above is.  Anyways, for the whole Red Alert/Destroyed Before Mission thing, I think ships that are destroyed before the mission begins never exhibit the exploding shockwave effect, and in my copy of FS2 the fighters that died in the Bastion escort mission turn up as completely disabled Ulysses in the next mission.  Possibly a bug.

Also notice that I'm flying a Perseus with Dual Maxims/Tempests...
In the previous mission I was in an Aries with Dual Kaysers/Treubchets...

To anyone who seriously thinks I dreamed it up or was intoxicated, I wasn't.  I'm serious! Really!

I've tried recreating the event, but I just can't find out how.  It really made me mad at first since it ruined my first real attempt and making a full length mission in FRED2, but after I restarted it never happend again.

Another strange happening is when I saw an Orion get cleaved in half, and the back chunk of it just hung there in space.  This is one you probably can recreate.  Have a Sathanas unleash it's beams on an Orion, then just as it's hull integ is about to reach zero order it to depart.  The Shivan juggernaut should destroy the Orion just as it's leaving.  If all went well, you'll get an Orion that looks like it was cut cleanly in half through the middle and just sits there in space, frozen.  This happened in the last mission of the Aeos Affair campaign, BTW, so you're chances at success might be boosted considerably if you try it here.

Wow, never thought of it like that...
The fact that they had to use a Colossus says a lot about my piloting skills...

Actually, flying debris will screw up anything if it's large enough.
In FS1 when you have to take the bastian to the node to go after the lucipher.  I've had the bastian at 10% when I destroy the demon, but debris from it slams into the bastian and kills it.

And debris from destroyers will do a number on most anything, seen it swat a poseidon out of existance before too.

Wow, that is pretty wierd. I guess debris is pretty powerful...

Say, I wonder what would happen if we gave the Kayser huge damage (kill a Sathanas in one shot type damage) and then fly in with it to 'In The Lion's Den' - and take out the Sathanas as soon as you jumped in and saw it. Heh, I think you'd probably still be killed by either the shockwave, the momentum of the Juggernaut, or the debris.
