Err, help, hardware troubles.
Umm, i'm having hardware probs, with my monitor. Every few ins it will distort, continualy flickering back and forth between a wavy image (wave is vertical) and the norma one. In a kind a strobe way. The waves look jagged, as if low poly waves.

Anyone ever get this? any help?
actualy, mabye not.

weird. This isn't really my area of expertise but have you checked around it for any magnetic interference? (although that's probably not the problem)

Also, try degaussing it. Probably won't help, but it can't hurt.

Heck of a lot of options there.

Hearing any noises, perhaps like a static discharge sound?  could be a high voltage leak.

Checked on other monitors to make sure it's not your vid card doing it?

At any rate, don't open it up and try to fix it, and for god's sake, do NOT resort to the old fashioned whack it to fix it treatment.  I did that once and a monitor damn near killed me.

Holy ****.
I took apart a PSU once and it shocked the hell out of me when my two arms accidentally bridged the circut between a couple of those hugeass 150V capacitors. I suggest no one else try it, even if you havent used it in several years (which was my case, I thought it would be safe....)

I would imagine that a moniter would have much more voltage than a PSU but I could be wrong....

Err, help, hardware troubles.
Try it with another monitor; if it's dying, CRT monitors are pretty cheap these days (or you can go with an LCD).

Let's just put it this way.  I weigh a good 300 lbs, and it was enough to knock me back 4 feet into my chair and leave stunned for a good 15 minutes.   Chances are good if it it had hit me on a heartbeat I would've been dead.

Literal advice:  Problematic monitor + monitor repair via hitting it upside the head = deathwish.  Literally.

Slam it.

Seriously, give it an open handed slap to the side of the casing. Not too hard, but just enough. Sometimes that'll help.

And try running it in a lowe resolution.

You are dealing with really high voltages here.  Don't get carried away...

Just find another comp to hook it up to - prove once and for all that it is dead, then buy a new one.  Seriously, they are just not worth the bother...

Err, help, hardware troubles.
Trying another comp is a good thing too, but if a new monitor is really, really too expensive, try and run it on a lower resolution or perhaps a lower refresh rate.

If you don't touch any of the insides, wacking it ought to be safe, as long as you don't go throwing punches like you're fighting Mike Tyson or something.

:wtf: to all the people telling him not to whack it.

It's not like he's gonna whack it on the open metal electron tube or anything. Don't be anal.

Whack it. Use a shoe if you're worried about electric discharges or something. Make sure you whack it relatively gently, and for pete's sake make sure it's during one of the acting up periods. Pointless to whack it any other time.

If it affects the wavy display in any way, you can be sure that your monitor's screwey.

Though you already knew that. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Yup, it is.

Although i can't help him by his description, a picture of the screen would be nice to see. And what kind of monitor he has like part number/model number.

And it can't hurt to give it a good wack, but it doesn't do anything at all but hurt your hand after a few. Unless there is some bad solering.

I know, but whacking a CRT makes some stuff go away pretty fast.

My TV as an annoying high frequency peep coming out of it sometimes. A simple slap to the side fixes that quite quickly.

The high frequency beep comes proberly from either the Highvoltage or the deflection yoke:)

Actualy the wacking can make the problem worse, for a TV or CRT;)
