Small mini-cap. ships!
Well I just thought something up. What about a new ship class something small maibe 3 to amax of 5 times bigger than the largest bommber in the GTVA.

Now this ship will not just another bommber but rather act like a mini-cap ship.
Here is what I thought: why not make this ship and instead of it beeing yet another clasical cap lets make thing interesting and put lets say 2 or 3 small beam cannons similar to the AAAf beam on it.  also put some 3 or 4 torpedo/bomb banks, and lets say 3 or 4 missile banks coupled with lets say 4 manned turrets similar to those used in wwII in the bommbers. Now these manned turrets are mainly used for AAAf protection.

The beams would be fixen in a foreward firing arc or you could give them a lets say 45 degree firing arc all around depending!

What do you guis think?

Aeolus pretty much matches with your description, IMO, but how are they different from cruisers? Considering that these, gunboats, are propably more easily destroyed by larger ships, is it really cost-effective to build them? Besides, a wing of fighter-bombers could propably do the same thing.

  • The GTA expects that every man will do his duty.
Along the lines of a bigger than average bomber, given that Freespace is vaguely WWII in space, I did wonder why there were no medium bombers such as the B-25. Imagine a Freespace version of the solid nose B-25J -- 12 Maxims! Not to mention another 6 defensive guns.

This idea sounds something like a space B-29 or such.

If a man consults whether he is to fight, when he has the power in his own hands, it is certain that his opinion is against fighting.

Kinda like this,  I know it's funny looking, it's a mini- Aeolus thingy I made by shrinking the Aeolus model and taking and adding a few things, I made it a long while back. It was the first thing I moded

But, otherwise I think everyone calls them gunships, some here has made some very nice ones.

I thought that corvettes were developed to be a small cruiser and/or very very big fighter?

Corvettes are much larger than cruisers.

Er, warship. Small warship, larger than a fighter, but a lot lighter than a cruiser.

err. in real naval terms, or in FS terms? Because a corvette in FS2 is just a cruiser sized vessel with capship armament.

You had better not be refering to corvettes again. ;)

Corvettes are much heavier than a cruiser, and larger, and slaughter fighters.

By the way, a Seraphim bomber is the size of a Lilith-class cruiser. A little large?

It doesn't occupy anything like the volume, though.

The problem with making mini-caps is that, as intimidating as they are to fighters, they get beamed out of existence real quick in my experience.

Well I know I havent posted in a long time in this post but..something must be wrong with the HLP servers..! I havent been able to login till now...! It alwais kept me in the loggin window dont know why..but anywai!

These ships that I described are too weak to take on a cruiser or a corvette on theyr own but if you use them in packs I believe they can cause quite some damage!

Lets say a wing of 4 ships takes on a corvette and I believe that they can win and if they cant send in another wing.

Remember these ships are quite powerfull but too week to take a cap ship one on one.  Soo if u have an enemy fleet to take out send in a destroyer to provide aditional fighter escort as well as 8 or 10 of these wings and there you have it the enemy fleet goes bye bye..! :D

No it's not...

Oh, and TI has the Harpy class gunship, which is pretty much exactly what you're descriing in the first post. I'd show you a piccy, but we're in the process of high polying it, and the old one's looking a bit dated ATM.

And in correct military terms the Ships go in the order of Carrier, Battleship, Heavy Cruiser, Cruiser, Destroyer, Escort and Frigate, with Gunboat falling into the 'Minor Surface Combatants' role..

Oddly enough 'Corvette' is no longer a used military term, posibly because they come somewhere below Gunbots, and possibly the Regimental Donkey.

However, the Corvette of the future will have terrible Photoshopping....

If it were 5 times the size of the GTVA's biggest bomber it would be pretty damn big,  cuz the Ursa is damn near as big as a fenris
