Other modeling programs?
Alright. Truespace 3.2...meh. Too hard to use, unintuitive, and annoying.

Do I, that is, we, have any other (free) option? Perhaps an older version of MAX? I managed to download Max 7 (hopefully legal), but it doesn't work with Windows 98 SE.

Don't forget blender.
Not much better intuitive interface than truespace, but its a pretty powerfull tool if you get to know it intimately.

GMax is great. The conversion process from GMax to an in-game model is a rather sharp and unpleasant pain in the arse, however..

3D Studio Max is simply A-1 Supar.   When I first tried to use Blender years ago I opened it up and stared at all the buttons for about 2 hours and then closed it.  Oh!  But I had managed to make a box...

Is there anywhere I can download an older version of 3D Studio Max? I doubt most of you actually shelled out $500...

.... if we were to partake of such dodgy dealings, we would certainly not be willing to divulge the information on a public forum, lest we violate the rules and incur the moderators wrath.

What?! No! I meant like, how Truespace 3.2 was LEGALLY free.

I don't do warez, or that kind of crap.

The only legal free version of Max is GMAX. Softimage have some XSi (think HL2) based free proggys too.

You can get a Student License for 3DS Max for about £80. You have to be at university though....

There's a 30-day trial of Max7 on discreet.com. I made everything on my website using it.
