Author Topic: Buggered Up Fonts  (Read 1339 times)

Hey, I started up my Freespace games after a long absence and found that the in-game text was all buggered up. Like it had been pixelated or something. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm playing it in the same resolution as in previous times so I don't know what the problem would be. Here's a screen shot if you don't catch my meaning:

It's a bug in the nVidia Anti-aliasing code.  You should either turn off Anti-aliasing, or use FS2Open, which includes a workaround for it.  Unfortunately, that's all anybody can tell you.

Where's the anti-aliasing thing? In computer settings or something? And my computer can't run FSOpen effectively as it's too old. And no, I'm not going to upgrade, not right now anyway.

Get RivaTuner, and install it.  Under "Driver Settings" in the main window, choose DirectX under the arrow next to customize.  Once there, go into the AntiAliasing tab (it will be out of view, it's the one on the far right) and if it has an AA mode, then turn it off.  If it is already off, select 2x.  If it says Determined by 3D application, either one may or may not work.  Hit OK, close RivaTuner, and try playing again.  Good luck :).

Hmmn, I installed it but in the driver's settings window there's nothing listed.

Thing I don't understand is why the text would go from working fine to looking like crap. I'd think that if there was something screwy, it'd be screwy from the get go?

No need to turn off AA or anything like that. You can solve this problem by altering the D3DTextureOrigin value in the registy.

My FAQ has full details.

That seemed to work, thanks. Although two of the values "UseLargeTextures" and uh, "Texture origin" already existed so I just modified them and changed the value to 1 instead of 2 and 0 respetively. Seems to have worked, though I haven't actually tried to play a mission yet.

It should do. IF you've got the FS1 textures handy (from the FS1 port for instance) you should notice an improvement in the quality of the Fenris for instance.
