For the flames---> I agree at 100%. First time I tried volumetric combustion, and maybe I should have unchecked the tendril box.
For the thrusters... Well, the glows ARE volumetric lights. For the thruster flame itself, well... the chimera is in fact the model I converted for FS2, and my inability to make thrusters to work make me not to do thrusters at all for this one (and that's a pity, coz I love my chimera...I hope one day I'll find a way) I'll do thruster flames for renders, at least...
Noise space warp? mmh, I'll have to find that.
Anyway, yeah, everybody is welcome to put their own renders there, I'm willing to make this post live quite some time
Next one, I'll add the Malia and some cains cruisers... I want to try better beams than in my two precedent renders

MAX's standard flames plug isnt' brilliant.
Try upping the detail/samples and playing around with flame size.
Otherwise try
www.cebas.com and get FREEPYRO, its a cut down version of a part of Pro optic suite (and its..err..free.)
You might also try using lensFX/glows with particle systems. That can make a beleivable explosion too.
Vlights are slow to render, in ANY 3d program..so skip using them if you *POSSIBLY* can, again lensFX glows might come to the rescue.
