It's pretty much "as much as you can". The idea is to be more selective and thorough than normal use, and I'm hoping that we'll be able to 'harden' some sections of FS2. As an example, the first project I have planned is to go through ships.tbl and make sure everything there is working properly, trying out some absurd or unusual values and seeing if it causes FS2 to bomb.
Depending on how that goes, the next project will be to get multiplayer a little more stable.
If you don't have any modding experience at all, just trying out specific features and saying "WFM" can also be handy; or switching on the FPS display and reporting the results.
So if you don't have any modding experience, that's fine. I think it'd actually be a pretty good way to learn, since if you make a mistake, FS2 should at least give you an idea of what's wrong if you put in a bad value or something. If it just crashes, then an extra warning or error should be added. I've found that if I don't know what's going on, I usually notice more bugs than people who have been modding for years.
