I must admit, I haven't yet, and that's on a 3 Gig comp and a 5600, the only time I ever got a 'smooth' transition between walking around and being in combat is when I opened up the .ini files and played with the settings. :(

What exactly are your settings at? I ran mine at high everything, with 1024 X 768 resolution. And it ran smooth with 256 MB of RAM (which Half Life 2 couldn't run on - I had to get an extra stick just to play)

I think it's the 5600 that is the problem to be honest, I'm becoming slowly more convinced that some lower/mid-spec cards were released with Shaders as a selling point, but weren't actually capable of handling them and maintaining a decent frame-rate :(

Actually, I've just completely reformatted my computer, so I might try a re-install and see how it performs now :)

I discovered (after buying it of course....) that the FX5#### series in particular is notorious for having a crappy-to-non existent DirectX9 shaderimplementation; apparently getting decent performance requires the programmer to use card specific instructions.  IIRC, Half Life 2 defaults to 8.1 shaders for nVidia cards because of it (albeit you have to consider the whole Valve-ATi as well).

On BluesNews, people have reported seeing this picture float around the internet for over a year now.  In fact if you've seen the really super dooper high resolution version of this image, things dont look very good.  Take the gun for example.  The barrel looks way too low poly.  Evidence that this pic probably is old, or Raven really needs to do some work on thier models.

Counter-Strike: Source is about the best my machine can handle. Which is fine with me.

Actually it's probably an angle that's very hard to see.  If you remember, the peseudo-Coke cans in Doom 3 were 6-sided cylinders, but you could only see that from above.  From the sides, the normal mapping made it look like a seamless cylinder.
who needs a signature? ;)
It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

Correct, I remember that, and how it was a pretty cool effect, and that probably will be done on the weapon's barrel. But man, if you look at a high-rez version of this image, the textures dont line up at all, looks like a 6-sided cylinder, and just plain ugly. Now, since this shot is supposedly old, I would expect they've improved this since when it was taken.

my point was that id seems to like misnaming their games. for example quake 1 should have been doom 3, doom 3 should have been doom 4, quake 2 should have been quake 1 and quake 4 should be quake 2. quake 3 should have just been called arena.

as for the matter of gameplay. they make the engine first then just throw something together to show it off. id makes its money selling rights/source to their various engines moreso that the games that they use to demonstrate them. so its pretty much become rutine buisness for them. once something gets popular people start slacking off in the design of it.

Halo was always about gameplay. If you look at the behind the scenes footage you can see how they push for gameplay much more. Even after trying to go for graphics mid-development of Halo2 they reverted back to focusing on the gameplay.
The only thing they have wrong with them now is that they're with Microsoft and they have not so good forum admins.

Speaking of which, new Live patch and maps are making Halo2 much-a better. :)

Halo2 must be different to the prequel in that respect, then.......

my nipples explode with delight

But really, I'd MUCH rather have a few more low-res enemies running smoothly, than one beautifully-realised million triangle monster chugging along at 5fps..

It's all part of the hardware/software Catch-22 and means everyone changes comps even sooner than they would want too...

There's no way it'll be a BAD game - nor is Doom 3 - for people with the highest spec brand new systems...
