Never mind that some of the architectural components look like they came straight from Doom 3.  The blood-stained floor and the door on the back wall are both pretty close.

At least it didn't mess up the formatting of the entire thread.  I've seen that happen before, and it makes reading multi-line messages a royal pain.

Sequel to Quake 2

Hmm.... they need to fix that 'oversmooth' look that makes everything seem plastic, bigtime.

You mean the way everything seems to blend seemlessly together despite what it's made of? (EG the guys chest skin and his belt/trousers).

Does this mean its going to run as crappy as D3?

So multiplay will be 1-6 players... =/

sort of.  The lack of grain / texture (texture in the sense of 'touch' texture) in the maps; the skin is too smooth and clear.  Look at your own arm, even, and the light that bounces off it is nothing like that.

I almost suspect it's done that way to highlight 'hey! we have specular' rather than look 'right', because it's surely something easily fixed with an altered spec map.

It's going to take place after the invason thingy in Quake 2 - you're invading the enemy alien world.
You get squad mates and all the usual stuff that's "cool" these days.

To me, it looks like a Doom 3 mod.

Ooh that screenshot is pants. Game designers really have no creativity at all now do they. I mean really we've seen a hundred bazillion screenshots like that now. How derivitive. The generic sci-fi arena setting, the big gun. They just aren't making an effort anymore. I used to be a fan of games but now this kind of thing is really starting to get on my tits. Speaking of which that guy in the pic needs a training bra.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

Well it is the standard "look at this purdy engine we have, think of all the potential fun you can have playing it!" thing.

Unfortunately, most of the big names don't need to try hard to get the sales these days. The massive fan bases will ensure the game sells. Not that every big name game is automatically pants - but you can certainly see the boundaries being left more or less where they are. Lots of neat physics and lighting tricks... lots of engine advances... but nothing new to really bring to gameplay.

they tend to overuse specular mapping.

Problem is, anyone trying to run those graphics on anything but a top of the line machine will get horrid framerates. Graphics are all nice and pretty etc etc, but you end up with a situation like Children of the Nile, so much effort put into getting the graphics nice that the game itself feels like it was bolted onto the engine at the last minute.

It has been, and it always will be about gameplay, no matter how pretty those graphics are, if the gameplay sucks, it sucks.

Enviornment textures are still too low res for me... one day an FPS will come along to satisfy me, but not yet.

For the record, I got Doom 3 running perfectly (with good graphics, almost exactly like the promo screenshots) on my high-midrange system, so it doesn't take a super computer.
