Question about my Conn
It says I have a 1.15MB conn, yet the download rate is (max)160KBps. shouldn't it be higher?

Nope.

1536 (1.5 Mbit) / 8 = 192 kB/sec which is your theoretical max download speed. The real speed is slightly lower as the network protocol takes some bandwidth, etc.

1.15 Megabit per second, not megabyte.  That's about right for your speeds actually.  It also depends on the other side, if they have a connection that's as fast as yours, or using a bandwidth limiter.
Broadbandreports has some good tools to test your connection, and to determine if you're getting what you should be.

no, it IS megabyte.

Nope, it is always megabit not megabyte when it comes to said broadband bandwidth. Divide it by 8 and you get the real theoretical max bandwidth.

Normally, your speed will be labeled as
X.XXMbit instead of MB, because normally, Megabyte is abbreviated as MB. You'll see it all over Windows like that.  The proper abbreviation for network speeds is Mbit, for Megabit.  Same thing goes for Gigabit ethernet speeds, it's the same exact principle, just uses bits instead of bytes.

When talking about network transfer speeds, everything is divided down into bits instead of bytes.  The bit is the smallest form of data, and 8 bits make a byte.  Digital data can be transmitted by 0's and 1's, which are the binary bits that a computer can interpret as data.

<-------- Has a 2.2 Mbit connection and gets around 210K per sec so yes, your download rate sounds about right.

<---------------------- Has a crazy fast conn.

This was my results from testing on a server 3k miles away, with all of my IM programs running. And IRC. And Shareaza.

Edit: Actually, Hmm. I did another test on a server that wasn't as loaded, and got these results. (Mind you, I share this conn with my parent's PC, and my Dad is using it right now, too.)

DUDE!  (though my upload could be better)

Something tells me though that I'm more limited by my university network architecture than the speed of the connection itself.
who needs a signature? ;)
It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

Mine would be a little green sliver of the bar, in fact, it'd probably be so small, there'd be no color!

On a more local test, my upstream was 900 and my down was 3700. Good enough for me. :)

*mumbles something about living in a technological vacuum and having to suffer with 56k or satellite internet*
and I got bittorrent working for a while but now it's farked again. :sigh:
*prays for DSL*
EDIT: oh, well... BT is working, yet again. My point remains that satellite internet sucks.

remember that if you've got a T1 for instance (1.54) then in theory you'd have, say, 192K, but you won't ever see that... you lose some to Ethernet, some to encryption, etc. .. it's possible to work it all out, so you can see what you'll actually be seeing in reality... all depends on the type of connection, and what you use it for
