We can't convince half the world that humans don't have some kinds of mental/mystical powers. What chance have we got of convincing them that aliens don't.

Heh. My favourite mythical object is money. Everytime I get it, it mysteriously disappears.

And I hate Q and his omnipotent pranks. They're airing TNG here now. It's damn funny show after seeing the movies, which are much better than the show. :p

IIRC all the days of the week are named after norse gods with the exception of Sunday and Monday (Which I'll leave you to figure out for yourself since they are pretty obvious :D )

Actually, if you take a look at one of the Romance languages (French, Spanish, etc.), you'll see that they derive the names of weekdays from the names of the Roman gods (Mercredi=Mercury=Monday in French, for instance).  English, being a Germanic language, derived the weekdays from the Norse gods (Wednesday=Odin's Day).  It's the same concept either way; in both cases, the days were named after the seven visible objects in the sky that wandered amongst the stars (the Sun, Moon, and five planets visible to the naked eye).

Sounds to me like everyone got the names of the days from their mythologies, which results in slight confusion, but in general are nearly the same. Interesting how they are derived from pagans.

Well, I do know that Juy and August were named after Julius Augustus, the Roman Emperor. Annoying really, for the people that more or less standardised '10' as a base number, one Emperor's ego gave us 12 months.

Flipside, as far as I know, there were already twelve months; two of the months were renamed after Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus, respectively.  Having twelve months stems from the fact that the Moon's cycle takes around 30 days to complete; divide a year by 30, and you get about twelve months.

My mistake their, you're right about the names, I remembered as soon as you posted :D

IIRC the Romans rounded that down to Ten to fit in with everything else they decimalised. Then tagged the 2 months back on later. Possibly it was to fit in with the fact that everyone they occupied was using 12 months, but I'm not sure. ;)

I once thought about a 30-hour standard day, but the only way we'll ever change the way we keep time is if we get shot into space where we have nothing to refer to for time.

Why change a time system that's worked fine for a few hundred years and that practically everyone on the planet is intimately familiar with? :p

Because everyone always complains that they don't have enough hours in one day, but they have no excuse with an extra six hours. Well, it sounds good on paper. :)
