Must be fake; even if you allowed a pilot to carry a firearm and trained them to use it, you wouldn't allow them to carry one that could pierce armour (and quite possibly the hull of the plane).

Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

That's a clip out of a standup comics' act. I wish I could remember which one it was though.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

I think it was Israel who had the idea the just lock the doors to the pilot's cabin and keep them that way until the plane lands. But then again, where would Swarzeneger and Harrison Ford be if not for planes full of high powered weaponry.

Actually, Swiss airlines have armed guards dressed as passengers in the plane. They carry bullets which are tipped with rubber, and cannot pierce the skin of the aircraft, and avoid the whole body armour ordeal by aiming for the head. And if your looking for large guys with serious faces, one of them is a 75 year old woman who stand, draw and let three bullets off into a bullseye in under 2 seconds ;) This IS true.

Heh, leave it up to the Swiss to figure out something like flight security. That kind of sounds like our air marshalls, except they're not on every flight. There's too many.
