it looks like something youd see he player carrying in an fps game. i stopped doing 'giant beam' ships in favor of 'giant gatling gun' ships :D

as for your avenger, put a skin on it and add it to the media vp as a tech model. im sure there are those who would benifit from modeling freespace's weapons for vwep support as well as 3d interface.

Actually, that destroyer design could be have a "artillery" role (like the Apothess from Inferno).

It's good, though not particularly original in it's concept. It could use more detail and structure along it's length, as it looks like a huge tube at the moment. Some length-wise beams (as in supports) and some ribs would be a start. More superstructure is needed, as well.
Any fool can pull a trigger...
