Here's another ship concept:
It was intended to be a second model of the Pyro GX (in Descent 2), but it turned out to be something different.
The HX (Hybrid X) is an all-purpose heavy fighter. It can (of course) go into space, it's capable of atmospheric flight and it's also a boat. When on the water, 2 small wings must open to stabalize the whole thing. In atmospheric flight, repulsors do the job.
As you can see it's equipped with 4 cannons. The 2 bottom ones are not used when on the water since it's sunk. The ship can change between 2 missile types by rotating the missiles holding girdles. A counter-measure launcher is placed in the back of the ship. As you can see the cockpit's window is large. The field of view is big because of this. There are 2 places in the ship. One seat is for the pilot and the other one for the missile or bomb controls, power and shield management.
No, the ship is not that slow. There are 2 big engines that can push the fighter at fast speeds. Usuaaly, the 4 cannons aren't used at the sam time - they are more used in a sequential way to prevent an overheat from the main power generator. If it does, it must be de-activated quick and cool off for at least 2 minutes. An auxiliary generator is there to back-up, but most of its power will go to the engines and shields since it's small. Of course, the power distribution can be adjusted by the co-pilot.
One main problem, it costs a lot to build those fighters.
