I know when a model is rendered each submodel gets a new pass, if my model is one mesh, but not all the polygons are physicaly connected to eachother, does this count as submodels?
actualy, mabye not.

I think that sub models are actually seperate models in the main model file. It doesn't have to do with what they are physically, I believe, it has to do with the actual model heirarchy...but you might want to get someone who's a bit more knowledgable in those specifics than me :)
