On the subject of $300 paper-weights...
My iPod decided to quit on me. It glady erased all my music, and if I can get it to turn on it shows me a little picture of a folder with a ! triangle over it. I've tried putting everything back to factory settings, but the computer won't detect that the darned thing even exists.

Any ideas? (yes..I know iPods aren't always the best choice, it was a gift)

I'm hoping to find a solution for this without doing that, but it's looking like I might just have to.

Start off by calling them, they've got the documentation in front of them and know all the known issues. If they tell you your garantuee is busted or something, you can start thinking about fixing it yourself. If they say 'we'll give you a free replacement' or something, all the more power to you, because you'll get one with a new battery.

That sort of comment always struck me as a bit odd.

Y'see, you have the '==' sign, which is a programming language equality check rather than that used in colloquial language. Fair enough.

But then you have both 'the' and 'suckage' misspelt, so any sort of smug satisfaction from using smart-arse programming language syntax is lost.

So it's a bit pointless, really.

This has happened to all my friends - they say you need to reformat your iPod, I think.

Meh, my old Sony Walkman never crashed :)

........... Mind you, it ate a fair few tapes and sounded like a cockroach trapped in a drainpipe, but hey ;)

I tried to reformat it, but the computer won't even detect the darn thing as plugged in (iTunes or the formatting software).

EDIT: It might have something to do with me running several hundred miles at least with this thing in my hand (cross country training, then track, and I've had it for over a year).

I find it odd for other reasons. The == sign is like a predicate, which are kinda like questions to the machine.

In this conversation Liberator is telling others that ipods suck. So shouldn't a single = be more appropriate? It's not like he's asking "Do ipods suck?"

[/smug-satisfaction]

useing the comparison opperator '==' rather than the assignment opperator '=' infers that the iPod is currently teh sukage, if the assignment opperator would have been used it would be like declareing that it is so, it's you makeing it that way, your oppionion, the comparison opperator does not change the value of iPod, therefore it is teh sukage you arn't saying that it is, it is a fact, it'd be teh sukage if you hadn't said anyhting.

Shut up about the damn '==' already, yeesh :p

Anyway, my friend had to do a bunch of crazy junk. I think he reinstalled all the itunes junk and ipod drivers on his PC, plugged in his ipod, reformatted it...and there was another point where he reformatted it twice, I think.
Try looking on some Apple support sites, I think it's a common problem.

No, for that you'd have to say "(foo == foo) -> true", because the expression by itself doesn't indicate true or false (where -> means "evaluated to"). Lib's "ipod == suckage" could have evaluated to false! :p

while technicly true, I do beleive he had intended to give that as being a true statement, it seemed prety obvus to me, but maybe I'm wrong, Lib what did you mean exactly?

Not quite correct if that's C.

int main(int ac, char *av[])
{
  char ipod[80] = "teh suckage";
  if (strcmp(ipod, "teh suckage") == 0)
    {
      ipod = "still teh suckage";
    }
  return 0;
}
