I want a thermometer with dual sensor probes, one for outdoors, one for indoors. When either temperature passes the other, I want it to beep at me or an equivalent alert of some sort, so I know to get up and close/open the window.

Someone invent one and send it to me. Thanks.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

They already have those, just without the beeping. So half the work is already done.

The beeping would get very annoying after a while IMHO.  Just get one with a really big display that you can see from across the room.

Umm....

Can't you just open the window when it's too hot, and close it when it's too cold?

I could build you one rather easily, but the costs would be prohibitive (unless you're filthy rich, in which case get back to me ;)). All you need is a couple of digital thermometers and a diff-amp circuit...
Any fool can pull a trigger...

It's actually for summer, so I'd be opening it in the evenings and closing it in the mornings. But the whole point of this would be to have something that would tell me when it got cooler outside than inside (so I'd go open the window), or hotter outside than inside (so I'd go close the window).

Ahh...

I could do you a basic schematic if you want, but you'd have to build it and tweak it yerself...

Heh, no, that's ok. I guess I was kinda hoping that someone would link to just such a product on Amazon or Home Depot or wherever that I could buy. It didn't for a moment cross my mind that you HLPers are actually crazy and talented enough to be able to invent such a thing!

I try. :D 'tis fairly simple electronics (me having just finished my A-level in the same, I still remember most of it) - if you know any army techs or electrical engineers then they'd almost certainly be able to hook you up with something. :) I mostly make guitar effects circuits, but this kind of thing can be fun as well.

Do we get adminship if we invent a wheel-and-pulley system that will open/close the windows as appropriate for you?

Yes, but they have to be the kind that need zero installation, work with any and all windows in the house - wirelessly, mind you - and don't squeak. Oh, and I'm not posting floorplans or any other schematics.

And neither is Splinter. :p
