Freespace sketchiness
t'was a bit on the bored side, and drew this up



a little explanation on the beams, there has been one thing that irked me about FS2's ship designs was the fact that the beams on the orions either used the plasma turrets, or the small plasma turrets on the side..they just seemed....wrong..

these are propositions for something that would make an updated orion "look the part".

hmm...the turret designs look simple...it could probably be made quite easily in DoGA CGA....

well i was trying to keep to the relatively simple design of the turrets, drawing from the modern types of beam cannons (they look like barnacles some of them) and the older types present on the old ships

And heya Singh, got any rear screens of that model. ^_^

I reckon that's actually cool enough to spend the effort to get it ingame...
When you consider it done, try exporting it to something that can be imported into 3ds max. (3ds or obj I think you mentioned you can get too?)

If no-one else volunteers, I'll have a go at rigging it up for ingame use and optimizing it a bit... :)

close enough, as long as the design philosaphy is relatively intact, now try giving it textures and parking in on an orion ("draw" from the original turret textures so it doesn't look brand spankin' new, more like a retro-fit)

Ok, I've managed to edit it quite a bit and make it a slightly higher poly/better quality. What do you think?

Personaly, i'm more of a fan of the "disk" turrets, but hell, this dont look bad! And considering the ones on the orion are kinda a retrofit, why not!

well, exactly, notice i did draw the disc type beam cannons there, they would look like a less "refined" version of the more modern ones that can be found on the hecates, etc.

Singh, kudos on the design.. can't wait to see 'em textured and on a high-poly orion. ;)

ermm....about textures - I'd rather no do em, at least, not in DoGA. I have enough trouble exporting it such that all the geometry comes out, but including textures screws up the export almost completely.

I'll upload the converted model tonight for anyone else to take a crack at it though :)

I think a turret should be easy to texture. ;)
But I'm not sure about the look of the texture...

thers a problem wit that one (and may all uv done) we kno it can fire on an angle, but it doesnt look like it can fire at 90 degrees. my opinion move the cannon forward a bit. i reckon its good, but it just doesnt look like it can get to 90 degrees, an i reckon thats a great flaw

You could do either that, or bevel out the part that swivels so it's kinda caved inwards with the back of the turret.
