Speaking of real galaxies, the Freespace nodemap shows quite clearly that the systems are not arranged according to anything obvious, like distance or direction. I say this because AlphaCen, which in Real Life™ is the closest star system to Sol, is most definetly
not the closest in the nodemap.
So perhaps the map represents something more useful, considering it's about subspace nodes: relative subspace travel time from one system to another.
