Anyone seen the Quake 4 E3 2005?
And we will all return to the gothic cathedrals and lava pits in Q4! :D

I think there will be rather bases. The Gothic style is only typical for Quake III.
I still don't doubt there will be lava. It's essential. :D

I sort of laughed when the story on the site mentioned the "BIG GUN"

Quake 1 had them too as I recall. Quake 4 is, to my knowledge, set in the Q2 universe so there most likely won't be any of the gothic elements from Q1. I'd be more interested if I could shake the idea that this was going to be yet another all-graphics, no substance cookie-cutter FPS.

I am curious if there will be any outside areas. By fancy level editing(Mr. Tim Willits), you can make box-based bases look nice, but if the engine does not have what it takes to make environment pretty, the map editors can do little. (Tried making something good-looking with the Jedi Knight I Engine, it was a hell)

Quake 2 had "outside" areas so I'd imagine that, to create the same "feel", this would have them too.

Anyway, Raven also did SOF and SOF II, both boring, dull, and cliche gore-fests. Like I said - hit or miss.

SOF2 was an excellent game - I still play it every so often. SOF1 was terrible, yes, but the sequel was very, very good.

As for Quake 4, I'm finding it hard to get excited, to be honest. Give me Bio Shock any day...

SOF2 came bundled with my 9500 Pro. My brother ended up playing it more than I did because I could never get into it.

EF1 wasn't that bad. Gamespot gave it good ratings (and its user ratings were just as good).

And Raven did not do EF2. :p If you don't believe me, then look both of them up on Gamespot.

I think Quake IV looks cool, but I think Quake Wars looks promising too

What really intrigued me in the trailer was how awesome they made the Strogg ('a metallic spine, jutting awkwardly through muscle'). Even if the game's storyline isn't good enough to make the most of it, at least the trailer was really well made.

I hope you know I mean outside areas and areas in the environment, among trees, plants and scenery. Quake II had very few of these, I remember only one, near the end, when you were to infiltrate the Strogg outpost.

I wouldn't think lush green scenery would really fit in with the general setting of Q2. I haven't played all the way through Q2 - I got bored of it by about level 3 - so I haven't seen the area you're talking but I was referring to the point in the first few levels where if you looked up you could see the sky. I put outside in inverted commas because I wasn't sure how these areas were achieved, whether it was some engine trick to give the impression of being outside or if you really were outside.

Knowing the Quake 2 engine, making environment is definitely hard, but I suppose Tim Willits (chief map designer for Id, a half-god) could probably make something better out of it.
In case you were wondering, A modified Quake II engine was used for Half-Life. Modifications were made in the engine to make better environment and more options and possibilities in Single player.
