I heard on the radio that his ashes are going to be launched into space. Sounds like a fitting end for Scotty.

What in the name of Christ are you talking about? I was simply rather preplexed that someone would refer to James Doohan as "one of the great actors of our time", so I asked about it. Oh, and "Postcount++, eh?" for your taking the time to issue such an absurdly arbitrary reprimand.

@ Redsniper: now that's fitting for him.

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. [color=66ff00]I think you all need to take a breather, cobra's idea of 'one of the greatest actors of our time' might be a bit weird but there's no need to push it.

That goes for you too cobra, being petulant does not make you more agreeable with people.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

  • I will never leave.
About what Cobra said, he was indeed a great actor of our time.  He may not have done much, but when he did it, he did it flawlessly.  The character he created was not only consistant, but it was also believeable...  Which ironicly is one aspect that most "great actors" do not have.

Sooooo, for a little while, there were people born who could act really well, then they all died? Earth must have passed through an anomaly.  :doubt:

Well, if Scotty were here, he could pilot us back to it.

IIRC, yes, and I remember hearing/reading somewhere that they always had to film scenes with him carefully, as he lost a finger on one hand.

Yeah..yeah, pretty much. Let me see.. todays best actor... is probably Viggo Mortensen. I guess I like him 1. because he really is a good actor, and 2. isn't taken in by the whole Hollywood ****.

And yes, good old Jimmy Doohan lost his right middle finger on Juno Beach on D-Day. That in itself doesn't make him a hero, however; he performed some rather impressive heroics.. I think he stormed something like 6 MG nests in a day.

Doohan's wartime experiences were every bit as hair-raising as his fictional fights with the Klingons.

As a captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery Regiment, he lost a finger on the first morning of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

He then saw a tank, which was carrying his substantial winnings from a cross-Channel card school, blown to pieces before his eyes.

Besides this, his aerobatic exploits, which included nearly crashing his aircraft in Holland while taking "a look" at a German U-boat, earned him the title of "the craziest pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force".

After the war, Doohan spent two years studying acting at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse, where he later taught.

[EDIT] @ Ghost: yeah, no wonder. he lost his finger either from the continuous mortar/aerial bombings or the massive bunker fire. (which made Juno Beach the bloodiest encounter on that day, i might add)
