Yup.  It's not like some daft bastard in a pub mistaking a Scot with a table leg for an Irishman with a shotgun, after all.

Shoot-to-kill, is the only viable policy if you're facing a real prospect of suicide bombing. It's a shame because it increases the chance of accidental death, but as you said you'd have to pretty ****ing daft to run from armed police challenging you.

That's exactly the point. Random searches are a deterrent to would-be terrorists, not a guarantee of safety to the public.

Let me pass on a tip to you, and hopefully you'll be able to pass it on to those whose behaviour it affects: when confronted with a would-be suicide bomber, you don't just "shoot-to-kill". You shoot him or her in the head for instant death - don't risk someone writhing around dying when they have a trigger for a detonator in their hand.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

you guys are going to laugh!

On my way to work, I got searched carrying only my laptop PC which they asked me to "turn on", and i sez to the guy, AYE! thats not part of the rules! this isnt an airport! and begins a "bi-tching" argument which almost lead to me being locked up lol!

secondly im on my way home from brooklyn @ 3am this morning and the bastards (mind u i am outside the station 10 feet or more away from the stairs) 2 cops came out of no where behind me and yelled WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Mind you i was attempting to light  a cigeratte while holding a big ass novel under my lighting arm, and i turn slowly and noticed the bastards hand was on his GOD DAMNED gun with the leather strap already off and i turn and said IM LIGHTING A GOD DAMNED CIGARRETE YOU PARANOID ASS! im telling you, the nieghborhood i live in is far from "rich and political", your average run of the mill ghetto project neighborhood and these guys had nothing better to do but mess with someone minding there own buisness trying to have a smoke.... PA-FUGGIN-THETIC.... the NYPD is now in my book, a bunch of WANKERS!

But random searches aren't going to help against this problem in the slightest. It's just to make people think that something is being done.

i totally agree, nypd cops whom are mostly i hate to say it old school irish or some form of that matter, especially the upper echelon of the force, are "convertied" repeat offenders of racial profiling back in the days of the issue.

and when this guy said that "london reacts with calm.." etc, its the truth, the NYPD is only doing this as an excuse to look like its doing there job. im sorry but in NYC u have more crazy's per square block than you do would-be terrorists. Be as it may lets say a dumb fu0ck would attempt to blow up a train especially with brooklynites or bronxites, or EVEN cats from Harlem, if that fool doesnt blow and his bomb fails, HE/SHE IS GOING TO BE CRUCIFIED IN THE TRAIN AND HUNG FROM THE CEILING GUARD RAIL! they did it (although aimed at the wrong "baddies") during and after 9/11, alot of people were beaten up or jumped because of fear of a suicide bombing in the streets alone.

if  a neighborhood can gather by the hundred and find the murderer of a close friend of mine back in HS and FIND the murderer within 15 minutes of the incident, and literally gave him True Civil Justice, those same people, on a train or in the street, wether or not they know each other or not know one thing, you dont threaten a New Yorkers life and think your going to get away if you failed, believe me.

I don't even think that they are much of a deterent even. I have no problem with searching anyone found to be acting suspiciously (The guy who was shot yesterday was apparently wearing a big hairy coat in the middle of summer, which is what tipped off the police). But random searches do little to stop the problem and considering the fact that the concorse of any tube station is packed during the rush hour the bomber would probably just detonate the bomb there and then anyway or simply turn and walk away.

I don't think so.  Because random searches can also cause congestion if done frequently; and that creates a rather enticing group of targets if so.  The other thing is, I'd imagine a suicide bomber wouldn't have too many compunctions detonating a bomb when challenged.

EDIT; airport style metal/bomb detectors are an even worse idea, too.... they're not sensitive enough to do anything unless you create a queue, and on somewhere as busy as the London underground is, that's going to create an effective killing field.

That is the shoot-to-kill policy, at least for SO19. They got it directly off the Israeli police / IDF after all.

Shoot-to-stop is the 'non-terrorist' policy; shoot for the centre mass.

Indeed - they could cause even more carnage and terror by blowing up everyone else waiting in the queue.

the first thing that comes to mind when u said queue was "net congestion".... for us pc savy boys and girls all i can say is we know how bad congestion is when queing some files or data, so imagine the physical real world remifications this will have if someone got the bright idea to just pop the 50+ people in 42nd st's 7th avenue main entrance, pandemonium.
