When I first joined, Anon scared the **** out of me. Actually, he still does

He scares everyone, don't worry about it. :) Btw, I haven't seen him around lately, anyone know what happened to him?

When I was a n00b, I found that Karajorma helped me out a lot (he still does). I have always considered him my mentor. Reading his FAQ was helpful. I'd recommend that to all new comers.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I found this place through the FAQ, which I found through HOTU. While I was lurking, before I made my first post, I noticed this board was very close nit. However, it has a clique-ish feel to it, lots of inside jokes and stuff. There is a hierarchy, whether people see it or not.  However, in the general forum, everyone is equal. I made my first post when I found something that didn't seem newbish, which was about the HLP Store.

Do you think a guide to some of the HLP in-jokes in the FAQ would help? :D
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.

That could help, a bit atleast. Atleast it would probably make me (and other newbies) feel somewhat less stupid at times since we don't get it.

I asked that same question to Cobra back when I was a n00b. Only now do I realize the Irony.

A question for all the newbies...
When I first got here back in whenever the heck I joined, I noticed that besides the odd couple people, there weren't many n00b bashings (or as many n00bs...). Stealth and Knight Templar were always going at it, an0n never ceased to make me laugh my ass off, and vadar_1 got banned for being a script kiddie.

Heck...we even had a Freelancer forum at one point.

Hehe...  Those were the days.  I can barely remember them, but they were a bit different back then.  I remember the whole Vadar_1 thing, though.  Had the same kind of smug attitude as an0n when it was admitted that he did whatever it was he did on IRC.  As a matter of fact, Vadar_1 and an0n seem awful similar now that I think about it.  Hmmm...

Anyway, back on topic, I have seen some of the best, as well as some of the worst of communities on these forums ever since I joined.  The welcoming portion back then wasn't as vibrant as it is today.  You would perhaps get a warm welcome, but I don't remember the welcome beam or the welcome boilerplate that we have now :D.  Back then, it also wasn't tightly woven as it is now.  People were part of the community, but people came and went as they saw fit, and it didnt really affect anything.  If an0n was banned back then, I don't think it would have mattered.  Now I see a community where everyone has his or her place, and the community is like a living, breathing organism.  It ingests newbs, and fecalates the waste.

Anyway, I saw this place as welcoming back then, and I see it as welcoming now.  And compared to other forums, it is kept real.  Hell, on BeyondUnreal forums, you were judged solely by your postcount.  The members were idiots, and the staff were bigger idiots.  It was no surprise that I left that wretched place on very bad terms, almost regretable...  almost :p.

Being a n00b is a state of mind, not a measure of time. As such, I never really went through such a phase, and wouldn't know about it.

I just kind of popped up in the General FS forum one day, largely as you see me now.

That must make me the King of All Newbs.
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

A question for all the newbies...
Luckily I found SG before I found HLP, don't know how it happened tho. and spent most of my noob posts over there. Like I said mostly, as I also helped start some big flamewars over here.:p And also found from Karajorma's FS faqs, not to mention the letters F, S and the #3.

I first went to the LO-mac forums, where I learned don't talk bad about the F-22, or your dead. Still an very ugly bird. I rarely visit there anymore. Otherwise I go to a Weather Forum, you could have guessed that right.;) There we are a pretty tight community too, until one of two guys post a politcal topic and they basicly are the only two that go at it day and night. Otherwise we never argue, and get along really well if a Hurricane is going on, and the only time we don't get along is during "snow season". And thats another story.:D

I would say that HLP, is Third on the list that measures how well you get along. Only above it are GW,and SG.

Otherwise maybe I have grown out of most my noobishness, as I say again, mostly, as I put too many smiles again.
