Do you mean in terms of continuing the story or just campaigns that just happen to be set after Capella?

Well, I suppose I should...

:welcome:

As for the topic, this has been discussed several times...

Like here, and here, and here, and... well, you get the idea. You're new, so I won't get mad or anything, but it is advisable to use the "Search" button.

Anyway, welcome to the boards! If you're looking into getting into user-made campaigns, you might also want to check out the Freespace Campaigns forum a little further down.

As for the story, there isn't really a set campaign that specifically "follows the story", as none of us know what the story is. If you want good post-Capella campaigns, try (rereleased) Derelict, Inferno, Warzone, or any one of the available campaigns hosted here (scroll down even further). If you want some other good ones, try Deus Ex Machina for a good laugh (and Just Another Day, though you'll have to have Freespace_Open for that; check the SCP forums), Sync and Transcend for pure spooky atmospheres, or Homesick and Sol: A History simply for their compelling storylines.

Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.

There's nothing that follows the story but campaigns like Transcend don't even attempt to follow it and instead simply tell a completely seperate story in the FS2 universe.

Ehhhhh......I was under the impression a lot of the campaigns followed the story after Capella nova'd. Like Derelict.

Unless you mean to tell me FS2 wasn't a sequel to FS1 :wtf:

(pretty much) Every campaign continues the story in some way, even if just by adding context to the universe.

Even CoW (imperfect as it is) had something to do with what happened post Capella.

I know but there is a huge difference between the "We will explain everything" style campaigns and the "here are some cool missions to play" campaigns.

Neither is better than the other but if you're playing Transcend or DEM to find out what happened to Bosch or why the Shivans blew up Capella you're kinda wasting your time.

Well, I kind of take the position that some things are impossible to find out in a normal way, but if you make other events tie together in the right way, the player can figure it out for themselves.  Y'know, deduction rather than exposition.

Like... Lost Souls isn't written to directly follow on from Capella, but what happens in it still fills in some of the jigsaws through implication.  Although I'm not doing some Half Life 2 thing we're you get told precisely **** all and are told 'that's ok, it's atmospheric and realistic' that you're more in the dark than a Gary Glitter 'bring your own glowstick' concert.

Exactly. I tend to find (good) campaigns carrying on the story of Freespace 2 (i.e. Derelict; bad ones include "Special Operations Command" and "Second Great War Part II"). Still, campaigns that just tell a story aside from this are good too, as long as they fit within some sort of reason (ex: Transcend and Sync are fine by my standards; "Jake Wars" and "Pirates of Delta Serpentis" are not).

I honestly find the idea of being able to play around with canon enough to tell a good story could be acceptable. Both of my currenty campaigns do this, one involving a much longer 2335 GTI Rebellion, the other involving NTF Operations beyond Regulus, though only slightly. Some campaigns have done this and succeeded, the biggest one I can think of being Derelict, with the jumping jump node that the Nyarlathotep was able to carry along with it.

There's artistic license, and then there's nonsense. Artistic license is being able to tell a story, though slightly stretches of canon may be evident, as long as the story is still of high quality and doesn't completely contradict Freespace 2. Nonsense is doing something without explanation and/or unacceptably contradicting Freespace 2. I look at Neo-Terra Victorious, for example, and accept it, as it gives decent reasons why the NTF would defeat the GTVA, though I still question it since Bosch had probably intended the NTF to be only a diversion while we worked on ETAK and opened the Knossos.

Then you've got stuff like the Jake Wars (*shudders*) that make a completely alternate universe using Freespace 2 ships and classes while doing completely absurd missions and storylines. Those I can't stand.

If you mean direct connections to the end of FS2, sure, there are several, but they tend to suffer for various reasons.

The one with the closest direct connection would be Technological Superiority, which is good, but was never finished. After that probably comes my own Cleaning Crew, which suffers from a case of semi-n00bishness. There are probably others, but none come to mind.

inferno is the best. :D

Derelict is definitely a good one.  Just make sure to get Blaise's rerelease.

Whenever we over at the FSU ever get off our respective asses you'll have another campaign choice.

Yeah the screen is changed with inferno.

What's the deal with the Jake Wars? Why do you feel it is so bad?

But I digress, it's not finished.

There's a demo though, and personally I think it kicks many campaign's asses.
