Obviously horrible that people are dying daily there, I'm just curious why this particular incident is being highlighted.

Because he's an american. In the mind set of the western world, "our" lives are worth more than "their" lives. Their lives exist for our benefit, whereas our lives are considered sacrosanct.

I'm not downplaying the tragedy of this event, but the guys do have a point - countless are already dead , but because it's "them" and not "us", no one gives a rats arse.

Actually I think the fact that he published an unfavorable article about some guy in Basra is the reason I considered it slightly different than the daily murder of innocents at the hand of "freedom fighters."

In a word, I thought it was just a tiny bit odd.

No, I have the same problem. The first linky no worky, while the second one points to an article written by him, not an article about his death.

Though peculiar, I don't think he was kiled because he wrote an article or because he was a conservative. It's Iraq - a warzone. People die, and usually pretty indisriminately. Remember, lots of "liberal" folk have been killed too, for example Margaret Hassan. If you go into Iraq, you're just rolling the dice - this guy just happened to roll a loosing hand.

Not atall.  He's an American in Iraq.... hell, tens of Iraqis are kidnapped or murdered every day, it's one of the most dangerous countries in the world justnow.  And it's probably worse for foreigners, who become a target of not only the 'normal' crime, but also politically motivated crime.

Yeah, and Vesuvius was a wee bit cooler than Hell, but you wouldn't want to go to either (don't you remember the - Shia - Al-Sadr Mafdi Army fighting with the British army in Basra?).  All of Iraq is pretty much ****ed ATM.
