Testing out a small part of a super-large render in the works :drevil:

Tell me how the explosions look - are they decent enough? Do take note tho - this isn't the final angle at all. The larger scene has the camera farther back with more ships in view, so if it sucks for now, do wait for hte end product :)

What program do you use Singh? The explosions look ok, but you really need to do something with your lighting by now :D

What UT said. You seem very enthuastic about rendering cool stuff, which is great, but your lightning and some other aspects could use some improving. PM or contact me by icq if you want, I'd be happy to give you some advice :)

lasers are way too big and need anti-aliasing. And, yes, lighting.

Carl: increasing AA would reduce total render time to a crawl - which is bad since then it's easier for it to crash.

As for lighting...well, the options aren't much (can only use point, parralel or spotlights) but i'll try to improve it as much as I can.

Lt.Cannonfodder: PM on the way :D

As I type this, Truespace is telling me that what I am rendering right now will be done in four hours. If I had it on lower anti-aliasing, it would probably be less than one hour. It's worth it. Better to take a long time to make a good picture than to spend a short time on one with jaggies.

Anti-aliasing is a must. You have to use it to make your picture look good. it is not an option.

I don't mean use fancier lights, I mean get the scene lit better. very the brightness of the lights, use color, things like that.

Hmm...the problem with that, as mentioned before, is stability. Although it would look better, there is a good chance it'll crash half-way through the rendering (which has happened often) and simply not finish, not to mention sometimes might take upto 24 hours + to finish while making the computer generall unusable for anything else (which is not possible considering that I need to use it to check my mail and browse around here :p) The image above already had x2 AA and took ages to render.

It's not a matter of if I want to or not (hell, i'd rather turn it all the way up) but wheter I can or not.... :(

As for hte lighting, will try to adjust it as best as possible.

if that took 24 hours to render, then something is seriously wrong.

that? hell no, that took a half-hour, one hour at most (cant remember)

but it's only 640x320....the time taken would double for each step I increase the resolution (800x600, 1024x768, etc)

Some of the other stuff I have does take a while though, and it's pretty damn annoying. I did have a render once that took almost twenty-four hours, and just when I was about to save the darn thing windows crashed on me and I lost it.

Crappy renderer :(

Edit: almost forgot. UT - I'm using DoGA CGA L3 which I have to say is the easiest modelling program out there :D

but apparently not the best rendering program.

Okay, I went to the site you posted and looked at all the renders. if that is the best the program can do then I suggest exporting the models to a different program and rendering them in there.

Those are the only light types C4D offers, though perhaps I have more options inherent to the lights themselves...

Ok, thanks to Lt. Cannonfodder, I managed to get it a bit better. do take note, this is part of a larger render, so the end result would be significantly different.

if it's bad now wait till you add complex lighting rigs. Lighting is the hardest part for your PC to calculate IIRC.

I have to say I really don't like those laser bolts (or whatever they are) - they look horrible IMO. They look overweight and slow - they need to be much slimmer and look as though they're actually moving.

The rest I like, though. :)
