London meet-up with Styxx
I'd much rather have armed gangs walking off with escalators than anti-tank weapons.

But it really sounds like they need the army. Why haven't they declared a state of emergency and called in the Brazillian army?

"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

so, you'r going on a trip around the world, but your not going to visit the US because you think you'll end up in gitmo, you won't visit the UK, because a Brazilian got shot there, and yet, you live in a self described urban war zone.

well have fun on your trip to Aulstrailia :).

They did that a few years ago when it was as bad as it's now. The gangs retreated and were confined to the shantytowns (most of them located on hills in Rio), but there wasn't a way to get rid of them without lots of civilian casualties or even more casualties among the military (by bombing and invading, respectively) so neither option was even considered. When the military left, it all started to get back to what it was before.

If I had been the commander in charge of it, I'd have cordoned off the shantytowns and ordered everyone to leave through a series of controlled checkpoints, where identifiable criminals would be held, and then I'd have napalmed the **** out of those hills. House the innocent people on military-controlled shelters for a time while they rebuild their houses themselves with government support (it's not like they actually legally own anything on those shantytowns anyway), but now do it in an organized and easy to police way (since right now the shantytowns are a nightmare for the cops). Would require quite an investment, but it would get rid of a lot of the criminals, would make it easier to control the gangs later when they reformed, and would give most of the people there better living conditions in the long run.

Besides, Rio stinks. Literally.

Rio is quite far from where I live, thank you. The urban violence problem in my city isn't any worse than in any other comparable city on a first world country. And as I mentioned, I wouldn't visit Rio either.

;)

Oh, and I won't visit the US because it's too damn hard to get a tourist visa lately, and the shooting is a very small part of my decision not to go to the UK.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Almost everyone I tell about my trip comment on exactly that. So I ask them if they'd be willing to visit Rio. Then they shut up. :p
