is there a way to increase the size of an image (in this case texture map) to a higher resolution without sacrificing detail?

make it bigger, go in with photoshop and make it more detailed

dunno bout anything else (thats why its hard)

wouldn't that cause pixilation though ?

You'd have to take it into PS and remove the pixelation as part of the up-detailing it.

no, you cannot get information out of nothing. you have to re-make it, or touch up the existing one.
