2000 Mitsubishi Mirage - what do you think?
i went to look at one today.  $4000, with 52,000 miles on it.  outside is in mint/perfect condition.  the inside is slightly dirty, nothing that a good soaping won't remove.

4 door, 4 cylinder, automatic, A/C blows nice and cold.  overall in good condition.

should i get it?  anyone have any experience with mitsubishi mirages?  i really liked it... not a head-turner by any means (probably my first car that's not :( ), but i'm going to be using it to commute to college and back, and to work and back, so i need somthing that's
1) reliable
2) economical - gas mileage
3) comfortable

What think?

I still think honda civics give the best bang for the buck in terms of reliability and efficiency. My civic's got 130k miles on it, and still haven't had any problems at all(and thats with the hilly georgia roads too besides). That's just out of experience though, I know nothing about mirages, though mitsubishi does have a reputation for building less-than-reliable cars...I hear the eclipse is a nightmare.

It's not a beautiful car, but it's nice enough.  I'd suggest nipping down to the local garage and - depending how much you know about these things, of course - offering one of the mechanics $50 or so to ride out with you and give it a proper tecchy check.

Car are obviously a lot cheaper in the US than over here, though.  I'm paying about £3k for a 1.2ltr Clio Sport (admittedly only about half the mileage of that one).

Me, I'd go for it.

If I were you, I will think twice.  There are a lot of good deal around, especially during this time of the year.  The car don't look too bad.  I am concerned about the mileage because it's a bit at the border line.  As you all probably know that most cars need a lot more care after about 60,000.  But again, if you're going to use it locally, it should be a good enough car.  One other thing, see if you could negotiate to lower the price.  I think it's the seller is asking for the max he/ she could get.

DragonClaw:  Yeah, i'd go for a civic if i could, but civics around here cost a fortune, because everyone and their mom want a civic, what with gas prices the way they are.  i'd be lucky if i could find a 2000 civic for $8000 with less than 100k miles on it

Sandwich:  I didn't take those pictures; the owner did.  i went to look at it yesterday though :p

aldo: yeah i told the guy that i want my mechanic to come and take the car for a test drive, check all the fluids, and look the car over top to bottom.  i've done 95% of mechanical work on my cars so far, but there are some things that only someone with an experienced eye will know what to look for.  good call though.

Wild_Fragrance:  i can't find anything that cheap :( this is one of the few cars for less than $8k+ that has 50k miles on it :(

i agree about lowering the price... i was going to offer him $3500, even though he'd probably freak out; even if i can get it for $3800, that's still not too bad :-/

How much would a VW Bora (or Jetta, same car) of the same year of this one cost over there? I just got one and it rules, but here cars are a lot more expensive, so the price I paid for it isn't a parameter.
Probably away. Contact through email.

You should be able to get one a lot cheaper than $8000...

this one is only going for $3500, same year as mine, but mines a 4 door. Only thing i see wrong with it is that crack in the back bumper.

Go ebay! :D

Okay, I find 1.6 costly to run these days.

Toyota Corollas are the very definition of car reliability.  That said, you still should get the car checked by someone before you make the purchase since it's used.

No, I'm not drivimg anything at the moment :(

Car like that should be fine, any likely probs would be accident damage but I imagine your mechanic buddy would spot any of that.

I hate modern Corollas. The very definition of "unremarkable".
Not everyone wants a remarkable car ofcourse though (they tend to get nicked)
