A so-so render by me....

Done in Adobe Photoshop 6.0. Motion blur was used on the Ares fighters.

I like the motion blur. Don't like the explosions and the beams. (Explosions look cheesy, beams need to be the same width, look better o.o )

I give it a C, with a B for effort. The explosions are stock (understandable) the beams are bad-you didn't use the correct(my) method, and if you insist on using Thunder's move the beams back so that they're not transparent at the start... and Orions don't have beams, but you got no points off for that. All in all, it's better than I could have done on the ships, but the other, much harder p[arts need a little practice... that's all it is, practice- Look at Steak's!

Hrm... A little more humility might be appropriate when trashing other people's methods like that.

He doesn't get points off but you do for not knowing what you're talking about. Not only does an Orion have beams, it has beams exactly where they're coming from in the render. You might have been excused if you thought this was an FS1 render, but FS1 doesn't have Molochs or Ares.

If it aint broke, break it!

it would like to point out the fact that it's only a _RENDER_ if you RENDER it - ie it was generated in a 3D animation/stills program [more than 75% done by the program - the rest can be some photoshop/paintshop fost-render spiffing up]

i get tired of incorrect terminology

if it is not a render - it's just computer art

oops! Sorry! I just realized my mistake. It should be called " A so-so FreeSpace Art by me...".

Too bad there isn't a "Edit Thread Title" function here....

Okay. Hm. I need to improve. I realised my beams were a bit transparent at the point where the beam glows meet the beam. Might have to widen it a bit. Blur seems to make that section transparent because of not enough width.

The Oriom in this picture is from FreeSpace 2, so it DOES have beams.

Sorry if I came off as a prick. Didn't mean to over-criticize. The best thing to do w/beams is to use the line tool, I've never had good results w. the triangle trick. The ships are very cool.

Its okay. At least yours was a constructive criticism.

Now that I look at it again, I find the Orion's beam closest to the viewer is in the wrong perspective.

Also, Thunder's method of creating beams in Photoshop is useful for making beams in a certain perspective view. Like things that are further are smaller than they seem.

I will try to improve on it!!

[EDIT: Any ideas on how to improve on those explosions???]

Quite nice.   No idea about the explosions, except perhaps a little smaller...

Wow dude, you have certainly improved a heck of a lot. That is really very impressive. I can poke fun at a few little details (like the beams), but the fundamentals are there - nice ship placement, and the activity is great. Angles on the render are good too (for all those out there beginning rendering - please don't make ships flat on to the viewer! It looks... funny  ) - and basically all you have to get pinned down is your execution and methods.

That is a very good place to be - because methods get better with practice (trust me, they do - I look back and think how silly I did things), but 'artistic licence' and 'originality' and all those other arty terms that make up an original artist cannot be taught. It's kind of like teaching someone how to paint - you can teach them how to make the strokes and what colours look nice, but if that person doesn't have a good sense of what looks good - it's very difficult.

So, my advice to you (and all other people rendering around) is to keep at it - you especially have a lot of potential.

What you mean? I'm a bit lost here. Care to explain in more details? Examples? Suggestions?

yeah sure, sorry. I mean, the front part of the orion should be bigger, and the back smaller, because of the perspective. Not too much coz the orion is very far away, tho, just need to find the good balance.

Hmmm... it's better, but I think the line tool really is better for the beams- that way you can make it solid and non-transparent... or wait...I see what you did now... use your first method, but make the beams in a separate layer, and they will probably come out solid when you flatten the image... allows you to move them around if you make a mistake.

As for the explosions, no advice man. You can get alternative pics of things going boom anywhere, but the stock ones are fine.
