Hosting an FS2 game over a network and a firewall
Hello FS2 community.

I would really like to host games for FS2 (espcially for my bro). I've recieved some help recently from a few people, but nothing has happened.

First things first: I have a D-Link router, and the default XP Firewall. I cannot disable either the router or the firewall.

One person told me to go to my D-Link settings and add 2 ports into the Virtual Servers list. No effect.

Another told me to go to my firewall settings and allow FS2. No effect.

I could really use somebody who has a lot more knowledge than me in this area. Thanks!

What you need to do as far as I'm aware is forwards two ports using the virtual server options. You need to open ports 7117 and 7808. From what I've been told both of these must be open for both TCP and UDP.

That's the exact set up I have on my D-Link and it worked last time I tried it.

Can't advise you much on the windows firewall as I don't use it but opening the same ports/FS2 should be good enough.

If you haven't already done so take a look at the Game-Warden guide to Multiplayer. Make sure you have the correct version of the PXO config too if you're not playing an IP game.

I'm not sure what you mean by "forward the ports." I could have already done it, but could you explain in some detail how to forward ports?

What you did with the virtual server basically, enter the IP address of your PC into the private address (at least that's what my router calls it), make sure that the virtual server can deall with both TCP and UDP and that should be it.

Are you trying to play an IP game or with FS2NetD (The PXO replacement)?

you need to open ports in the XP firewall.  7117 7808.  heres some instructions.

Go into  the firewall exceptions panel, click on add port, name it freespace 2 (1), and make the port 7117 TCP, do that again but name it Freespace 2 (2) and make the port 7117 UDP.  Do the same with port 7808 TCP and UDP.  thats why u probaly cant host
Well what do I do now?  Well Jack, you seem to have an act for blowing things up....

Didn't it work? Have you tried joing a game someone else is hosting to see if the problem lies elsewhere (like the wrong FS2NetD config, running in IP mode, wrong build etc.)

Everything works in FS2NetD. Joining other games works, joining servers works. But not hosting.

http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

Should have posted that link before. Nothing FS2 specific as far as I know but the help for other applications should show you what you should be doing if you can find your own router on that list.

I really wish Port Forward wouldn't call a DHCP Reservation a Static IP address. They are pretty different creatures.

A static IP address set on your PC won't ever change. When you reserve an IP address using DHCP you can have it change to 169.254.x.y one day cause of a router problem and completely confuse/annoy the hell out of tech support by insisting you have a static IP address. (I must remember from now on to check where people say that they've set their static IP addresses :D ).

Getting down to the problem at hand though I can't see why not having a static address would be the cause of the problem. Yes it's something you should do when port forwarding in this way but even if you didn't set one the IP address you're forwarding to should match that of your machine unless you were unlucky enough to have the PC check it's DHCP lease while you were setting up things (Seeing as how the PC only does that ever 4 days or so by default you would have to be pretty unlucky)
