Substance is pretty much a collector's item now.  Local gamestop buys it for $26 .

I live in Canada, so aside from Best Buy and their Canadian counterpart Future Shop the only place to go is EB Games. If they don't have it, I'm screwed since I don't have a credit card with which to buy online.

Of course, if anyone here has it and is willing to part with it (or a copy of it) I could send some money through the mail or whatever.

Just get Sons of Liberty.  Substance is little more than Sons of Liberty, plus additional training missions, Snake Tales (which was poorly done, IMO), and a skateboard minigame.  Not worth the time to look for it, if you ask me.

Yeah, but I don't have a PS2, that's the main thing. And there's no vanilla MGS2 for PC as far as I know.

Oh, you have XBox...  That makes a world of difference.  I believe Substance for XBox is still being circulated.   Anyway, it would be good to get a PSX for MGS1, because that is the baseline for the whole franchise.  Also, of the stuff from MGS2 would ruin it for MGS1 if you didnt play it first.  Kinda like watching a sequel to a movie you never saw.  Confusing, and a general spoiler of the first.

So in short, don't play MGS2 before you play MGS1!

I don't have either. I have my PC and that's it.

I've played a few hours into MGS1 (which is available for the PC) but unless it's completely necessary to understand MGS2 I doubt I'll go back. I've read up a bit (which is really why I want it, I play games as much for the story as for the gameplay, sometimes more so) about the whole MGS universe, and I figure it's about time I stopped missing out.

Unfortunately the MGS world is attention to the extreme detail. You really can't afford to miss anything if you want to get the full story.

My suggestion is you get some cheap-ass PSX and the game (really, both should be really really cheap) and do it that way. You can't miss with that combo, considering MGS and PSX were really made for eachother - it's arguably the best game for the system (along with Final Fantasy titles).

Twin Snakes is really the best game, considering it's MGS1 with MGS2 graphics.

The only bad thing is that it's on the wrong ****ing console.

GC is not under my judgement. I just don't get why they released Twin Snakes for it, if all money-wringing past and future projects will be done on Sony's crap.
