Author Topic: Sol: A History bug?  (Read 2991 times)

I'm trying to play the Sol: A History mod. I installed it to my FS2 directory and downloaded the EA and Inferno core VPs as the Readme says to, but whenever I trying to run FS2Open, it says that it is looking for a file that is on the maker of the mod's computer. It specifically mentions a Heavy Laser and various other files, anyone have any ideas?

Doesn't S:aH also require the FSC?

Sol: A History does not run on the SCP. It's for FS2 Retail, only, AFAIK.

I got that same error message when using 3.6.7, and using 3.6.5 fixed it. Great campaign, by the way.

Sol: A history uses Inferno R1 (not scp-patched) and so will not run correctly in FSO.  The problems may be confined to a handful of missions (ships with too many maps will cause the crash) but there may be other problems as well with the tables.  The file on someone elses computer that is being refered to is actually the code module location on whoever's computer did the compilation, not the mod, so that just means he's getting a crash.

I wonder if putting in the SCP patch vp for inferno would help...

Well, with some experimentation, I've determined that S:AH works ok on SCP 3.6.5, but I was also able to, with a bit of work, make some new tables that would let it work on even the most recent Inferno build and not even complain at all. I have a link to a rar archive with the fixed tables at the bottom of this post. I would note that fol some reason, at least some of the icons that worked with the original icons table when running S:AH under SCP 3.6.5 or under retail do not work now. I haven't the knowvledge to fix these issues. The icons in question are the planet icons and if anyone wants to have a crack at it and fix what I couldn't, please do.

Simple Installation Instructions for Sol: A History.

I'm working through this campaign now.  Here is how I got it to work.  yes, it's pretty simple.  No, you're not going to like it.

1.  Do a full retail installation of FS2.  This means from the CD's.  Install to the default installation directory (which is, iirc, c:\games\freespace2)

2.  Launch it once to do setup for your video rendering, blah blah.

3. exit the program.

4. Go get Sol: A History from Blaise's website.  Zipfile.  Save the Zipfile to your Freespace installation directory.

5. Go get the Inferno Core and Inferno EA Ships files from Inferno.  These are self-extracting executables.  Put the VP files into your Freespace installation directory.

6. Unzip the Sol:A History zipfile into your Freespace Installation directory.  It contains a folder called 'data' which will replace/update the existing 'data' directory.  This is easiest to do by choosing 'extract here' when unzipping it.

7. Launch Freespace 2.

Okay, yes, it's a bummer that SAH doesn't run on the SCP (unless someone has fixed this) but who is complaining?  The campaign is absolutely stunning and will keep you busy for a long time.  40 missions over 4 time periods.  I also believe (but don't quote me on it) that SAH is connected to several other campaigns including Inferno, Derelict, Homesick, and Blackwater Operations.

Ok, scroll up and actually read my earlier post, ionia. S:aH works on SCP v3.6.5. Not only that, I linked to an archive of modified tables that would let it work on recent SCP Inferno builds (though the friendly and enemy planet briefing icons haven't been working and I don't know enough about tables to be able to fix them).

I put the tables in the SAH directory, and ran it using the 3.6.5 exe, but I still get errors, and then a complete CTD. What else am I supposed to do?
Wh00t!? Vinyl? Is it like an I-pod 2 or something?

Those tables are for the current Inferno builds. Without the tables, just run the mod on 3.6.5. It should work. It did for me.

And they do have to replace the tables in the folder *\data\tables, where * = the path to your Sol: a History mod directory.

I did, prior to making my comment.  I had the same difficulties in getting it to work, otherwise I wouldn't have said a thing.

Ok, where did you put the files? The updated tables have to replace their originals in the /data/tables folder for the mod. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but according to the S:aH docs, you have to have a couple VPs from Inferno as well. Specifically, INF_Core.vp and INF_EA.vp.

EDIT: Also I did forget one thing. I also have the INF_2Patch.vp file in with the other two, so that might be why it was working for me. *grins sheepishly*

Really? I am intrigued. What led you to this conclusion? :)

Smarty ;).  Force of habit, I always try to leave myself an 'out' when making a statement.   I'm notorious for missing some dinky little detail that sets the Forum Wolves loose.  Hence "don't quote me on it".
