On Mars? :D

We did have a great multipage thread about it.  My personal feelings are that it may mean that we get something that isn't...say...like the Doom movie :D

I think Halo as a universe has much more potential right off the bat.

My suspicion is that Peter Jackson is only on the credits to a)get him money as part of the WETA deal and b)so they can advertise it as 'by the director of Lord of the Rings' or somesuch.  Apparently executive producerships are like sweeteners used to get other deals to go through.

The crucial part of that idea is that most people (read: almost everyone who has posted in this an the other thread) thinks that Executive Producers have a large impact on the film in every case. In actuality, only when said Executive Producer is the primary monetary contributer to a given project does his opinon actually matter. I'm seeing this as a "zomg we g0t Peter Jackson, teh m0vie will pwn" sort of situation, and he will actually get very little say in the creation of the film, as Aldo already so eloquently stated...

Fact: Executive producers are in charge of quality control.

Fact: Peter Jackson himself is a fan of the game.

Result: something that won't eviscerate Bungie's universe.

Deepblue...having been burned so many times would leave you less optimistic :)

We'll see what ultimately Peter Jackson can do with this thing.  If they hire a good director to go along with him then maybe we'll see some things come along.

Director and the writers are going to also be very important.  I think heeding Aldo's thoughts would be wise...he has a very valid point but one that I'm optimistic will not be played out.

Doom didn't have a plot. Halo has three good books worth and more.

That's not entirely fair.  Doom's not only got no plot to run with (at least not one that the bible-wavers wouldn't blow up the studio for), if you go back to Doom 1/2, there is actually quite the antithesis of any form of plot.  Seriously, if you want a laugh, go read the manual to, say, Final Doom and/or play it at or around one of the "briefing" screens.  A real laugher in the context of modern videogames.  There was material in Doom3, maybe, but there were still no real characters.  You saw living humans what, twice outside of the first two levels?  That's not material to build a movie from.  Halo, on the other hand, has several major characters that interact throughout the game(s) and who have backstory if you go to the novels that's pretty solid.  The movie does still have massive suckage potential (especially since it's basically the biggest viral marketing ploy of all time) but, unlike doom, it's not assured.  There's potential to make it good.

Halo 2's cutscenes had the makings of a good movie.

Seriously, if you had added some kind of sub-cutscenes to explain the actual levels, I would've gladly paid full movie price for it and walked away feeling like I'd gotten my money's worth. It wouldn't really be rewatchable that way, but from that starting point, I'd say it's got a decent chance...especially with Microsoft doing everything to keep its cash cow grossing.

Two words; Wing Commander. That had 5 games, a rich story, a well developed universe, and a cinematic game style (epsecially WCIII & WCIV), and it still turned out to be a pile of puke. Come to think of it, name one Videogame-Film adaptation that hasn't been crap and has managed to do justice to the game upon which it's based (I believe IGN has a nice article on the subject, and made it pretty clear)...

@WMCoolmon; Again, I refer to WC's cutscenes, which were pretty good for the time (they had Mark Hammil! *APPLAUSE*) and would have been an excellent basis for the movie. But the idea is to create an entirely unique story that can be approachable by fans and virgins (forgive the crass analogy), as basing a movie completely on the story from a given game (like focussing completely on the events in Halo 2 for example) might be a little constricting in that fashion...

For this, i'm agreeing completely with ZmaN. Plus, however good the movie proves to be, many (mainly diehard Halo fans) will loathe it...

Fact: Executive producerships are often handed out as bonuses
For example; http://imdb.com/title/tt0118971/fullcredits
One executive producer listed is none other than Keanu Reeves manager/agent
http://imdb.com/title/tt0167260/fullcredits
Executive producers of ROTK include 2 CEOs of New Line Cinema, the founders of New Line Cinema and 'a good friend' of Peter Jackson.

Fact; Peter Jackson is hardly likely to be critical of a movie his own SFX company are working upon.  In fact, he sort of has a vested interest in praising it.

Fact; Every movie in history based upon a video game has been vapid ****e

Fact; Many book adaptations are also vapid ****e, regardless of the book quality.

Result; who knows!

i'll remain skeptical of this..

an Oscar Winning producer/director does not make for a good movie.

i'm sure the movie will be eyecandy supreme.. but this also does not make a good movie.

look folks, we can all hope until doomsday for a good movie adaptation of a game, but until then, hollywood producers will always screw it up.

Final Fantasy was a decent movie.

Had bugger-all to do with the games :p but the CG was fairly well done :D

The phantoms are also a pretty genuinely creepy entity...

All in all I think it got most of the rap, because most people really didn't get it (And neither did I, really, the first time around). Once you get used to the out-there nature of it, though...good flick.

t'was a little overhyped, and other than name, it wasn't a Game/Movie adaptation.

Sure, it was a good movie, it looked good and there have certainly been stories further 'out there' than the one in FF... but in financial terms, it was one of the biggest flops in movie history. The flick, created by Square Pictures, cost around $167 million to make and release, and ultimately pulled only $55 million worldwide. For those of you who aren't math majors, that's over $120 million in the red. Not good. And it basically bankrupted Square Pictures.

Other than that, not a bad movie at all :nervous:...
