I have an orthodontist's appointment this Thursday to get my braces, but I am still not feeling certain about getting the treatment.

4 teeth will have to be extracted for the treatment in the original treatment plan.  I spoke to my orthodontist that I wouldn't want to lose my good teeth and he suggested a new treatment plan.  It's a new technique just got approved less than 2 years ago -- putting small metal pins into the gum to help bush the teeth to make rooms.  I am feeling uncertain, not sure if I am scared of the new treatment method or the pain I am going to get for at least a couple of years.

Any comment?

I removed the last bits of my own braces when I was 22, that was 14 years ago.

So I am the last person who should comment :)

You do know that extracted doesnt necesairly mean "removed". I had 1 tooth "extracted" and all they did was have it move to a new location ( and pull out of the gums more) by attatching extra braces bits to it. Make sure you know what your orthodontist means by "extracted"
actualy, mabye not.

IMO.... if the 2nd one won't result in a loss of teeth, then I'd go for it.  Either way it'll be unpleasant (well, unless they anaethetize you - then you may end up dreaming of Care Bears and fluffy pink clouds like last time I was in a dental hospital :D) but my instinct would be to go for toothy preservation here.

But in any case, it's not a call I or anyone else could make for you.  I'd suggest calling your orthodontist and asking to talk about it; part of his/her job involves dealing with people, not just teeth, so they they have a responsibility to offer reassurance / honest advice if requested.

I'm not sure you have any better sig Maeglamor...

I had braces and i'm now pretty happy with it (i wasn't when i had them). I would rather say that sooner you have them the better. Older you get longer it takes to complete the process.

Well, sometimes.

braces are hell for the years people wear them, cosmetically and phsically, but they end up giving a beautifull smile.  Basically, when the doc gives you a new ajustment, youll have a hard time eating for about a week and a half, and your chances of picking up a chick is cut in half, but once the treatment is over youll probably have perfect teeth, and if you keep them nice and clean, youl notice that the few years of aches were worth it.

and for teeth exctractions, try to get the narcotic anestisia IV its fun as hell

Braces aren't that bad, just got my top ones removed about 2 months ago, and am about to get my bottom ones off. And BTW, braces doesn't hurt bad, the worse time you will have is the first 3 days, but if you keep high on pain medicine, you will be fine. And then as Drew said, when they tighten them, you will be sore, allthough not as bad as he said.

However your treatment is a whole lot worse than mine, as I have only had to have a tooth uncovered. But, if it were up to me, I'd rather have the teeth removed, than have the pins in my gums. That hurts just thinking about it.:blah:

...and your chances of picking up a chick is cut in half...

It looks like we have a majority opinion here-- Wild Fragaria must pick up chicks whether she wants to or not. Good luck playing for the other team.

All I can contribute is that my experience with braces wasn't too bad. They only hurt for an extended period of time after I first got them on. When I had them adjusted, I was never sore for more than a day. But I didn't have to get any teeth extracted for that, and I'm not at all familiar with that method of inserting pins in the gums, so I don't know what that's like.

I wouldn't recommend the extraction option. They do numb the area pretty good or put you under, but the recovery period is a *****.

I used to have braces... All sorts of them. The treatment is free here to a certain point. And I was wery young at the time so I could have not cared less about them braces. Too bad the orthodontist's didn't like the fact that I wasn't wearing those irratating thingys when I should have, and aborted the treatment 'cos I wasn't "cooperating"... Despite my unwillingness they did manage to get my upper teeth somewhat straight before they dumbed me...
So at least my teeth look at least somewhat good at first glance...

When I was in the army they removed a back tooth from me. My friends had a good laugh when they heard me talking... My jaw was so numb from the painkillers. But when the drugs wore off it hurt so much much I had trouble thinking straight. Fortunatley the good doctor had given me some painkillers with me, and some serious stuff in case those didn't work. So I had a couple of those and spend the rest of the day in bed in some kind of half-aware state... It was kinda weird. But at least I had a damn good reason to skip the days service. Others were doing combat drills in the rain while I was in bed, having a wild trip.

My teeth are a little crooked, but I'd never even consider braces.  I went to an orthodontist once, and they rattled off about ten or twelve things that were "wrong" about my teeth.  The way I see it, if I can still talk and eat without any problems, there's not too much wrong with things, and besides, my regular dentists has never said anything about the matter.  There are cases where braces are applicable, but I have the distinct feeling that a lot of orthodontists out there will recommend them at the drop of a hat; they must make a pretty penny, too, considering how expensive the damn things are.

I'd say something useful, but all I could think of was this.
