On making videos (programs and editing)
I am having trouble with Pinnicle Studio 8 and Windows Movie maker, both don't recognise the video clips (.avi's) I tested to edit for the making of demos and music video.

I plan on using FRAPS for ease of use in capturing specific sequences and then after video is edited and put together with soundtrack later on compressing it for smaller DL size, then rar'ing it of course.

What (hopefully freeware) programs do any of you recommend for this process of putting the clips together?

I know what I want to do, just lack of ability and program alacrity are my hurdles hehe :D

The industry standard is Adobe Premiere.

Or Final Cut Pro, Avid....and Vegas are all major editing suites.  But I'm with Carl on this one, poney up the cash and get yourself Premiere Pro.  If your serious about editing then its the way to go, plus it meshes nicely with other Adobe products...Go PP!  :p

Actually I was looking at getting into video editing and what not soonish.
I've been recommended Adobe Premier a number of times, so its probably the way I'll go eventually.
Any other lil handy apps or filters out there handy to have?

photoshop helps sometimes, depending on what you're doing.

I have worked with Premiere Pro, Final Cut DV Pro and Avid Xpress  and I must say that Premiere offers a good start. Its easy to use and works well with other Adobe products like After-Effects for composeting what works well with Photoshop and to complete the apck their is Audition for doing some audio work (haven't worked with that but seen it on a presentation and it left a good feeling about it).

Final Cut for the Mac is mostly like Premiere. A little bit different to use but when you are maybe more used to working with other Mac applications you would like it.

Avid offers a lot but is in my opinion in some cases just to complicated. Some functions are hiden where they are easy to use in the other programs. Also the programm cost a lot more then the others.

I mostly prefere a combination of Premiere, Combustion, Photoshop and Max for doing things.
My last work is this -> WC Saga trailer 04

Actually yes.  Get yourself Audacity and the LAME MP3 encoder...both of which are free.  that little audio program has saved my buns a bunch of times.
