Just to make sure: Naming conventions
Anyone has a good doc listing the naming conventions for the Freespace Universe? I mean, all of it, including:

GTVA Fighter and Bomber Wings
GTVA Transport Groups
GTVA Captial Ships - per capship when it applies

Shivan Fighter and Bomber Wings
Shivan Transport Groups (?)
Shivan Captial Ships - per capship when it applies

GTI Fighter and Bomber wings (maybe from Silent Threat)

I wasn't able to find a good compilation, if anyone can link me to one, I'd appreciate. Thanks.

Just to make sure: Naming conventions
In FS2 all hostile fighter/bomber wings are named after zodiac signs.
GTVA fighter/bombers are named after latin alphabets, with Lambda reserved for terran transports.

But just check out this and this place in general

It came from outer space! What? Dunno, but it's going back on the next flight!

Cool, but I meant something more on the lines:

Terran Fighters: Greek letters, Alpha to Epsilon
Terran Bombers: Greek letters, (...) to (...)

Vasudan Fighters: Greek letters, (...) to (...)
Vasudan Bombers: Greek letters, (...) to (...)

Shivan Fighters: Zodiac Signs, (...) to (...)
Shivan Bombers: Zodiac Signs, (...) to (...)

GTI Fighters: (whatever), (...) to (...)
GTI Bombers: (whatever), (...) to (...)

Thanks anyway, that helped. :)

I would imagine everything after Epsilon would be appropriate for GTVA freighters, transports, etc. (although, Zeta, Iota, and Kappa have been used for GTVA fighter wings).

I imagine capital ships (both from GTVA or enemy cruisers, corvettes, destroyers, juggernauts) can be named anything. Here's a little reference for such names: http://www.pantheon.org/areas/all/articles.html

Just to make sure: Naming conventions
Friendly wings (any species): Greek letters, Zeta should not be used in SP missions due to a bug in the game, Lambda and Omega are generally reserved for transports
Terran ships: A number of things: Greek gods, famous battles, famous related people (i.e. GTD Einsenhower, GTSC Einstein), glorious-sounding words (i.e. NTC Impervious, this is more for NTF ships), real life ships, any Greek letters except Alpha through Zeta (more for transports)
Vasudan ships: Egyptian gods and places
Enemy wings (any species): zodiac signs and constellations
Shivan ships: both Hindu and Christian/Judaic gods (FS1 had more Hindu and FS2 had more Christian/Judaic, but both games had some of the other types as well)
Ancient ships: Minoan gods and places

That's about it. :)

Search is A-1 SUPAR!!

I shouldn't have to be doing this for you

Wing names: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,6498.0.html

Capship naming scheme: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,6526.0.html

And I recall someone made a document containing all the capship names in all Freespace games. But you have to search for that one yourself

And what bug is that? I've had no problems with Zeta wings.

If you are a Terran fighting against OTHER Terrans, their wings should be named for colors, like Red, Blue, Yellow, etc. I think they did this in Silent Threat for the GTI, and it adds a bit off..Alikchi-ness to your campaign.

It depends on which faction it is you're talking about. Or on who's writing the campaign.

This is the way I do it:

GTVA wings: Alpha-Tau (but not Lambda, Iota, Zeta, or Kappa)
Shivan wings: Zodiac signs
Rebel faction: Colors
Mercenaries: Medieval weapons (Halberd, Pike, Rapier)
Pirates: Pirate-related things (Parrot, Hook, etc)
Rebel faction #2: Predatory animal names (Tiger, Wolf, Lion, etc)

Yeah, but the FS2 convention seems to be zodiac signs for everything. ;) FS1 had slightly different naming conventions for the wings:

Friendly wings (Terran): same as FS2
Enemy wings (Terran: colors
Friendly wings (Vasudan): zodiac signs
Enemy wings (Vasudan): zodiac signs
Enemy wings (Shivan): Hindu gods

There is some room for flexibility with these things though (especially due to the FS1/FS2 difference), so as long as the names don't sound really silly, they can probably be changed around a bit. ;)

I just tried putting a Zeta wing in a test mission and it seemed to work fine. However, I distinctly remember putting in a Zeta wing in a mission a few months after FS2's release and the game crashing whenever the briefing ended and the mission was started. I eventually traced the problem to the wing name. (a few other people also reported this) Maybe it was something they fixed in the patch. Anyway, I rest my case. ;)

You mean like SFr Satyanarayana?? (I actually had a freighter named that in a mission once :D ).

Oh, and you do have theFS2 Reference Guide , right?

lol yeah some of those Sanskrit words are really long. :D (just like in German, small words are put together to make big words)

I have that guide as well, but it isn't really accurate as far as the wing names go. (although the lists themselves can be useful) It has some other useful information, however.

In FS2 they are. In FS1 there are different naming conventions (for example when you were flying against traitor terrans, their ships were named Traitors Alpha, Traitors Beta, etc.)

I just call everything x and y because I'm so used to that... :D

I don't even know how to say a few of them, such as the letter à or the partial derivative sign , but I see them everywhere. :p

Take this for example; what was the point in putting in those stupid gammas (g and G) and xis (x) when they could have used just about anything else. And then there is that blasted integral sign ( ò ) that is impossible to write correctly. (although aside from this greek letter mania, this stuff is great :D)
