The lighting is a bit bland, but otherwise it's a very nice fleet render. Nothing really special, though.

(I've been looking at some real renders recently, so this is less impressive for a few weeks  )

That's a damn big fleet....!

I'd say about the only thing it really needs is self-illumination on the glowing red bits to set off the shadows better.

hehe thanks... I'll see what I can do about the red glowing, for later renders. I can do self-illumination, if it uses a different texture :P

notice the shadows? hehe.

Took me 3.2 minutes to render this, went over the picture 9x with ray tracing(in all catagories) and anti-aliasing... I have to say Lightwave 7 is fast and effective

Lunarcell is definitly being overused on this forum. If you have Truespace or any other 3D make the planets in the program. There are some good tutorials for this.

BTW nice render

LunarCell makes the best planets, thats why its used...btw I've used it since I started rendering(whoa long time ago). You try making a sphere with textures as good as LunarCell's planets!

Ok... I challenge you to make a better planet than I coul in 3dsMax. I have the earth, and there's no way you can make a better one than the one I have...

Yes, I know, there is a map of earths surface in the CD. The truth is that an experienced ps artist can make better planets than lunarcell.

Total BS

Look at this page: http://www.noirextreme.com/digital/digital001122.htm

This is for 3DS MAX but I think you could use the same technic in TS. Of course the maps are made by pros. But I think if you have some skills in PS you could make nice looking planet texture maps.

I have tried Lunarcell and it was good. But I don't like the thing that I really don't have 100% control over what I'm doing (like shadowing is hard to get realistic and you can't use Lunarcell if you want to make animations in a 3d program).

you dont need bitmaps...in most ways it would be better to use procedurals like noise and mask it off in a tree, a little complex but overall it would look better (even when you were close up) and also you could change the colours more easily.

also try using NURBS for planets if you can, its much more efficient.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

ditto

That noise trick works great for nebulas as well.  I like to use a fractal noise map as the base map, then use a turbulance noise map as a secondary map...just for some irregularity.

Well, as for planets, I usually use both LunarCell and TS. Make a very large map in LC, Map Color style, then wrap it around a huge sphere in TS.

Nice fleet. Could be more redder, though - try and figure that out.

I think I'm going to go planet-hunting...
