Much more than that    


Sith are "rouge" jedi... their own type if you will. The way it worked was "one master, one apprentice". So each sith clan was fighting each other as well as the light jedi, which was before the Episode 1. The Jedi believed all the Sith were dead... but they aren't(Palpatine  /Maul, and later: Vader{whoa that ryhmes})
