"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I need someone who can get FS2_Open to run and can gather the various shots needed. Once that's done.... you're more than welcome to work on it. :)

Ovrkl. :p

More important than a kick-ass system to capture from is someone who knows what kind of clips to capture in the first place. :)

Mostly it's learning how to use the camera, setting up cut-scene scenarios etc, so a good Fredder is needed ;)

That, and someone with a good sense of how to get a good framing. :) I recently replayed the single-player campaign of C&C Renegade, and while the game itself was simply fun (as an old C&C fan), the cutscenes were utterly outstanding. The graphics in them were mediocre at best, but the cinematography? If they had actually been filmed that way (instead of CGI'ed), I'd say that the cameraman and director of filmography were utterly brilliant. The character animation was superb as well; they must have mapped out actual actors going through the motions to get that level of realism in the character movements.

If you want, you could just do what Interplay or V probably did in this case:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r08pQHjF1X0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6xzWtIA0HQ&mode=related&search=

As for clips...I'd say record everything. Record playing through the single player campaign - sometimes even in the middle of dogfights, you can get impressive footage that's hard to record if its all set up. And if we have enough a collection of kickass videos, then editing them into something coherent isn't all  that difficult. If you want a comparision, then simply run through each mission again with SCP and without; taking stock footage of stationary objects in each and comparing it to each other. Although the important question to ask, however, is what kind of video do you want? Comparision or old and new, or just the plain kick-assedness of what the SCP looks like now? :p

in case it's still being debated I'll give you my 2 cents.

the music from the title.

it's mischevious, and it's comical and sadly it's repetitave with a predictable build that can be taken in 2 ways, 1: it sets a strong guideline dictating how the video will proceed or 2: it dictates the video's direction with no intrigue and no ability to improvise.

think about the video from a number of directions with this song in mind.

1: metaphorically a rat in a maze, running from corner to corner, or a squirrel running and avoiding through a crowd of ppl or a fighter flying through a saturated ongoing battlefield of fighters, cruisers, bombers for 2 3rds of the song and here is the problem the song dictates little can change, new points won't fit you are left with the star of the video and all stand in characters for the entirety of the video.

no new points can be introduced you are stuck with the one to carry you through the video, if it doesn't start compelling it'll be hard to finnish compelling.

additionally you will have to choose is this video going to be a talky or a silent film with music driving it?

personally I think it would be a difficult song to create a compelling video from, using the music for 1 rd of the video is feasible but a compilation of 3 songs may be more wise or let the video speak for itself without having music push it.

I'm tinkering about at the moment with a musical piece that will sort-of combine both Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 themes, it's a little less Orchestra orientated than the stuff I've done for it up to this point, but, time permitting, I may have something for people to listen to be the end of the weekend.

Ok, due to a soundcard death, things are taking longer than I'd hoped, I've done a quick mixdown of what I have so far, some of the drums are a little quiet, and it's not finished, there's still a lot of polishing and cleaning to do, but this is just an update to show you how things are progressing. I've made it a bit more up-tempo, and tried to include both the FS1 and FS2 styles in there, though I admit, once this is finished, I am never going to play the chord progression C, Csus4, Cm, C5 in this order again. Ever.

http://www.aqsx85.dsl.pipex.com/UpgradeWork.zip

Volume may be screwy, I haven't reinstalled Soundforge yet, so I had to rely on Goldwave for normalising, which is a good program, but I'm not very used to it yet.

Edit : It's a zipped .Ogg file, Pipex doesn't like anything that has 'unusual' extensions for some unknown reason :(

Edit 2 : Please don't tell me it ends too quickly, it's not finished, this is just an update ;)

I like it - with reservations. ;) But my reservations aren't about something there, but about what isn't. The general feel of the piece is moody atmospheric stuff, slowly building up to a tempo, but since it's not completed yet, I don't know where you plan on taking it. I think that eventually it will need to go somewhere more energetic to match space battles and such. So, I guess my main question is, are you thinking of taking it in a more energetic direction further on?

what about a mix of the flight of the bumblebee merged with the hall of the mountain king?

show one of the faster moving and more agile fighters, a Ulysses (or Ulysses b) would seem perfect for the task, getting banged around and cutting loose with some tempests and laser fire while flying through debris and avoiding beem and flack (I mean really flying close to cruisers and the like almost crawling across the hull to give perspective of the size difference then introduce a huge cruiser off in the distance that the little ship has to head to and merge the music with hall of the mountain king as a finally.

I mentioned a Ulysses "b" because I've been banging around the idea of doing some modelling by making a newer Ulysses (minimal tweak of the original) that would be faster but alot less stable while running afterburners, also tougher shield but weaker armor and the ability to mount 2 Helios missiles externally under the wings seemed interesting given their poor speed and tracking the idea being forcing the pilot to get in close at speed like a dive bomber and breaking off asap to get clear.... what would be really neat would be to make them dumbfires and susceptable to damage even when still mounted on the fighter.

Yup, you're correct, I'm trying to keep it to the format of the original Freespace videos, which started off very moody and atmospheric, built up to a moderate pace (which is where this one ends at the moment) and then kicks in with a powerful finale. I might even drag out my guitar for helping with the Finale, as you can't beat a good thrashy rhythm for hardcore tension if it's mixed right, however, mixed wrong it sounds like a god-awful mess, so I'll see how it goes.

My main concern is the repeating chords, I need to find some way to break out of that loop without the whole feel of the tune changing beyond recognition, but I don't want the finale to sound like 'more of the same but louder'. I'll keep working at it and post a few ideas as I do them, see what people think :)

Hiya,

Just as a point of note; when scoring a motion picture/video, the biggest, most severe no-no that one could possibly do is to use any of the following:

  • 'Also sprach Zarathustra' by Strauss
  • 'The Hall of the Mountain King' by Grieg
  • 'O Fortuna' (yes, that theme from Carmina Burana) by Orff
  • 'Flight of the Bumblebee' by Rimsky-Korsakov
  • 'Adagio' by Albinioni
  • anything by Mussorgsky

Doing so will -- in that very second -- immediately and irrevocably slam the production into the deepest bowels of the clichéd camp abyss. Think Battlefield Earth. Un-intentional hilarity ensues.

Please don't.

Cordially,
~Selectah

Well, that was kinda one of the things I was looking for... it's SO overused that the music itself would garner more attention that a (no offense, Flip) random anonymous piece, and yet then putting grand space battle scenes to said music is then such a major contradiction.... *sigh* It was a thought... :sigh:
