Aussie HLP meetup, 2006
Right. We've discussed it before. We've said it would be cool, one day. We've told ourselves we'd get around to it. Well, **** that I say. Lets just do it.

With Steak's freedom about to be harshly curtailed (:p), we're running out of time before being "responsible adults" catches up with the majority of us and we never again get to do anything fun. Ever.

So. In 2006, we are going to get all the Aussie HLP regulars (and whoever else happens to be around) into the one place (prolly Sydney) at the one time. The only debate is going to be when, and where me, Grug and the other interstaters are going to stay.

And one thing - I'm serious about this. If you want me to put it another way, I'm going to the East Coast some time next year, and if we don't plan it, Steak, Grug, VA and whoever else I can find are going to get a seemingly random sandgroper knocking on their door saying "Hey" at some inconvenient and difficult to explain moment.

[EDIT] For the record, I'm thinking Semester break would be the best time for this, even though it will mean inflated ticket and accomodation prices. I have 2 Tuition Free Weeks from the 17th to the 28th of April, but the chances of that being synched with everyone elses schedule is, I suspect, pretty low. My forst semester next year finishes on the 23rd of June and starts again on the 31st of July, which I suspect will be easier to fit in. So, who else is coming and when can you come?

The smart thing to do would be to coincide this with Steak's wedding, as there'll be free alcohol.

It's a continent. There's only seven of them, it's not that hard to remember them :p

I'm not completely sure when I'd be able to come, but some time after May could probably work. I'm not very organised at the moment so I don't really know.

Not true!  I was one of the best in my geography class.  Name a country, I could tell you where it is.  It does, however sadden me that close to 10% of our own students don't even know where some of our own states are.

If you're serious about me answering, upper East Coast of Africa.  Borders the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Aden, if I remember) and Ethiopia.

There's a thread about it somewhere here...
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Oh, very good. :) Did you have to learn every country?

Not all of 'em, its just when someone mentions one by name, I tend to know the general vicinity its in.  Its sort of an inborn thing.  Plus, I study on my own time, as I plan to go to Europe, the Far East, and possibly New Zealand and Australia someday.

Re: Aussie HLP meetup, 2006
I'm totally there. I've gotta think of where you can stay - my house is full of bachelors at the moment (my dad and brother), so if you're looking at midyear next year, I could take a few guys. Physically speaking, that is. Gotta clear it up with the family. ;)

I'm also going to be far more free in that midyear time btw (June-July) - towards the end of July I'll probably be away for a week; I'll get you some exact dates.

Indeed. Thanks. :) For the thread in question: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,36865.0.html

Re: Aussie HLP meetup, 2006
We already had an international HLP meet-up, with me, my brother (Splinter), Galemp, and Su-Tehp in downtown NYC. Was fun. Especially the part where we saw Galemp walking around Penn Station with a cardboard sign that read "HLP" held up to his chest - I can't help but wonder how many people saw him and thought that indeed, he really DID need "HLP". :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
