Sharon disbands Likud? Forms new party??!
http://news.yahoo.com/fc/world/israel

Well, this is....news. Wasn't expecting that!

Not sure of the implications as yet, it could be a breathe of fresh air for the whole Middle East situation, it may just be Likud in a different robe, or it may be the death knell of Sharon's political career. I think time will tell.

Edit : Sorry, title should be Sharon disbands parliament and leaves Likud ;)

I predict this will cause turmoil in the Middle East!

In the end nobody really cares and people get killed tommorow just as they did yesterday.

Give me a call when something changes.

Re: Sharon disbands Likud? Forms new party??!
Trust me, something just changed. For the leader of Israel to leave a hard-line party and reform as a centrist one is a major step in the Middle Eastern stage. Be it for better or for worse.

As to how centrist that party truly is, time will tell, I feel the Israeli elections are going to be very very important in the coming months, as will the policies it is won/lost on.

And this is an interesting development to say the least. I guess he got fed up with trying to stay in with the loonies. I'm wondering whether he can get enough support on his own to stay in power, or if he'll sink without a trace...

All I'll say along those lines is that if there is one man in this world who would know how to defend himself from such attempts, it is Ariel Sharon.

Re: Sharon disbands Likud? Forms new party??!
I've read predictions that Sharon's new party could get as many as 28 out of 120 seats in parliament while Likud will get about 18. Not too shabby... it would give Sharon the most seats in parliament but he'd still need to form a coalition...

All in all, I think we may be seeing a change for the better... but we won't know until after the elections.

Everyones going to the polls soon it seems.  This was kind of a shocker to me when I read it on BBC last night.  But I guess its been in the works for a while...

I'm sure people who follow Israel politics aren't all that surprised.

I've been having a tough time trying to keep up on when we're expecting the non-confidence vote to dissolve parliament here.

Sharon's forming his own party because he basically betrayed not only the ideals of his original party, the Likud, but also the ideals of the people who voted him into office.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. Don't think we need to ask your standpoint on this then ;)

Seriously though, I'm far from an expert on Israeli politics, and this came as a bolt entirely out of the blue for me, I don't know if theres been a build up, but I haven't been aware of one. I knew there was some level of disagreement over the settlements and the removal of them, but I never thought the differences ran that deep?

It has been coming for a while... I mean, the disengagement and stuff was all against his own party. He used to be a huge supporter of those settlements. Other things, too.

Which (aside from being in the same country, and aside from both issues being security related) has what to do with the disengagement?

Yeah, I thought so. :doubt:

My point is that it seems you will never be happy until you have someone in power that's willing to carpet bomb the territories.
