Very long Inferno loading times..
I spent an hour yesterday getin inferno on my dads wirelees internet connection (NOT wi-fi) and I installed inferno into a fresh installation of FS2...  it was taking forever to load so I downloaded the Release 1 patch and FSO 3.6.7 and ran the -mod command and its still taking forever to load...  can the loading times be reduced?

Its not an old laptop, its got a pentium M 1.6, 512 MB RAM, Intel 915GM Graphics so it isnt ancient (a few months old, to be exact)....

I really need some help with this

sorry about the typos, this is a bumpy 18 wheeler we are in!

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
You can't use a standard SCP build, at least, not for long. Many of the ships in Inferno have poly counts that are above the limits. You should go to the Source Code Project forum, and from there to the Recent Builds subforum. Click on the "CVS Builds" topic and then download an inferno build of the SCP executeable. Extract this and select it with the launcher. Once running Inferno R1 (patched) with an Inferno build, hopefully you'll see some improvement.

EDIT: By the way, the archive you download will have two EXEs. One is a release version, which will have the letter r on the end of the filename before the extension, the other is a debug build which has a d before the .exe. Use the *r.exe version.

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
You shouldn't use an INF Build for R1, it's SCP compatible. The ships in R1 aren't that high in polycount.
Inferno builds are only needed for R1 pre patch (which will give you lots of debug errors) and the next release. The point of the patch was to fix bugs and make it work on regular SCP builds.

It could be the IBX generating that is causing the slowdown. Do the long loading times still occur after generating the IBX cache files? does it happen on that system with regular SCP running FS2?
Are Intel graphics even supported by SCP?

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
retail FS2 never had any loading problems, it loaded the same speed as my desktop PC...  Im not sure about FSO without inferno......  Ill take inferno out and try FSO on the Freespace 2 campaign and see if there are loading problems...  there shouldnt be any, as far as i know....

EDIT: FSO loaded up the freespace 2 main campaign with no problems, so the problem is confined to Inferno.....  Any suggestions?

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
Interesting about the Inferno builds. I can't recall being able to run Inferno on even an Inferno build without the patch, though...

Have you generated the IBX cache for the models and then tried reloading the mission?

The patch fixes debug errors that occur with SCP builds. For use with any SCP build the patch is required. You do not however need to use an Inferno build and doing so makes your pilot file incompatible with normal builds so you should only use INF Builds when they are needed.

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
I think I'm going to have to get out my joystick and play some more. Personally, I don't mind having a couple incompatible pilots. It means I have a couple less pilots in my pilot select screen for the normal builds.

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
I found out it was my Antivirus.....  I tried it on my sisters PC and it still took forever to load, then I remembered that they all had the same Antivrus, disabled it, and it loaded like the normal FS2 campaign....

PS My anti virus is EZ Antivirus...

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
Strange that it doesn't slowdown FS2 retail or standard SCP then...
Oh well as long as it's working now :)

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
Never heard of EZ Antivirus. Sounds like some third rate crap. Ditch it and get AVG Free edition at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Yeah I've always run AVG without problems.

Much better than those other POS resource hogs.

Re: Very long Inferno loading times..
Well, Grisoft is a professional company. AVG Free is paid for by the products that they sell, and they know that people who use the free version are likely to purchase one of the paid versions if they need the more professional grade stuff as long as the quality on the free version is up to the standards of the pay for it versions. Really, it's a very smart business model. Much more intelligent than Symantec plays things with Norton AV, but they can and do trade on that name. Grisoft is just out there quietly doing the same work and really is doing it just as well, if not better.
