Re: Volition might get back in higher profile acti
By some crazy coincidence, I happen to have a modeling tutorial open in another tab and the blurb at the bottom says:
Quote
Michael Comet is currently a Rigger/T.D. at Blue Sky Studios in New York. ...blah blah... Prior to that he was lead animator at the video game company Volition, Inc., where he animated most of the cinematic sequences for Descent: Freespace, and headed up much of the realtime character animation and cinematics R&D for their RPG title, "Summoner". He can be reached via email at [email protected], and has a personal homepage at: http://www.comet-cartoons.com/ which has more information and samples of his work.
Maybe someone should email the guy, he might still have the models lying around.

I'd absolutely die and go to heaven if I could get my hands on the original source music.  Even if they were pre-assembled into uncompressed formats, I'd still be eternally greatful.

What do you mean by original source music? Like, the ingame music? That's everywhere.

He's talking about the original pieces that were almost certainly sampled at a higher frequency.

What I would really like to have are the original high resolution versions of the FS2 ship textures. We have the big textures for the FS1 ships and they look miles better than the ones for the FS2-only ships. I don't think this guy could give us that; he probably worked a lot with the original Vasudan and Shivan models and might have those, although I think that stuff is probably still Interplay property unfortunately. :(

seeing FS2 run on the current SCP builds is pratically the best you're gonna get for this generation, i'd still like to see 16x antialiasing, ingame bloom effect, and whatnot.

You can already get 16xAA on the newer nvidia cards, but it runs like molasses unless you want to play at 640x480. :p

screw freespace 3, id like to see an xbox 360/ps3 version of freespace 1 and 2. get some much deserved respect for freespace in the console ommunity. then they would have laid the growndwork for demand for an fs3 which thq would be willing acting upon. as for rights i dont forsee interplay lasting much longer. they seem to constantly spiral down. i do agree that volition is slipping. no matter what happens freespace open will be around for the true diehard fans.

I really would object to having FS1/FS2 on the consoles? Why? Because that would insure that THQ would make FS_ was developed for consoles, then ported (most likely badly) to PC. Not only that, but the majority of console players, that I've found, are the loud, annoying people that only play Halo and think it's the best game ever made. They just don't seem as mature as the usual PC gamer, from what I've seen. I'm not saying it's true, I'm just saying that's what my experience with both crowds has led me to believe (although there are, of course, exceptions).

Re: Volition might get back in higher profile action?
Bobboau's right.  After seeing what they could have done with Red Faction and RF 2, I'm really doubting a continuation of the series would live up to it's previous titles, and live up to what the community has done as well.  What I would like to see is what irrational is doing with a "successor" to the System Shock world, with the supposed Bioshock title.  It's along the same lines, but with a different spin on things.  I'd like to see Volition do a new space sim with little elements that remind you of FS1 and 2, but not really meant to be the de facto continuation of Freespace.  Perhaps a melding of Homeworld and Freespace, now that would be awesome.  control of entire fleets, but some missions would require you to go inside of the fighter and do some fighting on your own.  Either that or make capship piloting part of the original story.  I know we can set up capships to be piloted with the SCP, but making it part of the game from the start, that'd be cool as hell.   Oh and for goodness sake, dont develop it side by side for the PC and Xbox.  Develop to push the limits of PC hardware then PORT to Xbox.  I dont want to see what Ion Storm did to Deus Ex Invisible War (Axe-ing the PC code tree and porting the Xbox code over to PC for release).

Pretty much RF1 was alrite but RF2 didnt even have multiplayer, when the standard is set that low, I dont even want to image how a future Freespace game would look like...

Re: Volition might get back in higher profile action?
Seconded. No body really liked my pessimism after Red Faction and Summoner were released, but really after seeing RF2...

In all honesty, the only reason FS was good was that it was an excellent merger of Wing Commander and X-Wing, coupled with the fact that there are so few space sim games out there. Its simple plot, even FS2's plot is pretty simple, was also pretty self consistent.

RF1 could have been spectacular but things like multiplayer vehicles, weapon balance, and a cohesive plot weren't there. Summoner had a wonderful plot and setting, but the game balance wasn't there. (Boss fights=enter inventory, use tons of scrolls since they will all instant cast and stack, then return and unpause and the enemy is dead. Also the whole chain attack system that was twitchy and weird in a quasi real time combat system)

Ace, you're right about Freespace being a clone...

...however it's not Dolly at all.

It's more like Mr. 47 from Hitman - a superman made from all the badass stuff lying around molded and cast into an unfanthomable icon of power.

FS had the best:
-Interface *ever*
-Communication & Command/Control system

Someone's dropped by.

I imagine the :V: guys all have lives, and have to deal with people pestering about computer games constantly though, so it might not actually be 'fun' for them to drop by.

Someone's dropped by.

 When did THAT happen?!  It's been so long since I've even thought about checking PXO's site; I completely missed this one.  If I'm reading right into what's planned for this, this could be huge for the D3 community as well.

Re: Volition might get back in higher profile acti
I'm surprised the PXO site is still up. Just for fun I tried looking for myself in the rankings, but the FS2 page is completely dead and the D3 page screws up after the first 1200 players or so. I don't think I ever made it that high in D3. :p

The PXO site is ours, so... where's the surprise that it's up coming from? O.o
