I'll tell you in two weeks, once I can actually play it decently.

Best firefights in a shooter to date.  Unimpressive storyline.  Not actually scary at all.  Don't play multiplayer.

1. Impressive gameplay
2. Love the bullet time.
3. Story, although nothing innovative, is very well told, at the very least, with a nice twist at the end that is decently hidden.
4. Reasonably scary, and reasonably mysterious at the same time.
5. Havent treid the multiplayer.

Overall, around 8/10 from me. :D

Story's terrible and poorly thought out, the 'scares' feel disconnected, gratituous and gimmicky, firefights are pretty fun although I personally got tired of fighting the same guys over and over again after about an hour. It's a flat action shooter falsely marketed as a horror game. Overall it's probably worth getting if you enjoy shallow, mindless (but fun) FPSes like Far Cry.

This game is all about close-quarters combat.  If that's your style, and you like it fast-paced, this is your game.  It can be repetitive at times, but it's not all that bad.  I tended to like the story, but it's not scary, like System Shock 2 scary.  It has it's freaky parts here there, and when you step back and finish the story, it's not bad at all really.  I kinda liked the whole thing.  The game acutally makes first person slo-mo useful.  I liked it way better than Quake 4, which came out the same day as this did.  I'd definetly go for FEAR over Q4, as a comparison.

The shotgun is brilliant, and the twin pistols are useful. The rest of the weapons sucked quite badly, especially the heavier ones. I don't think I used slo-mo once, to be honest. The lighting and effects are quite nice.

I'm enjoying CoD2 a lot more, it must be said, purely for the variation in locations and scenarios.

Agreed, on a whole. I missed bullet time, when I played Qauke 4 after.

havent played the demo, but I did play quake 4, its beautiful!!!  Graphics are just amazing..  better than far cry in some cases...  (my favorite game, btw)....  gameplay is good, but one thing that stood out to me was the sound of the game...  Human transmissions are great, Stogg make great sounds, and the gun sounds just blow my freakin socks off!!!!  The shotgun sound totally kicks!!!  the machine gun sound is nice, the Nailgun actually sounds like your shooting nails!!!!!!  the blaster sounds ordinary, but the rest of the sounds BLEW ME AWAY!!

Graphics - 10   Beautiful Textures!
Sound - 10    SIMPLY AMAZING!!!
Gameplay - 9  Smooth, nice, easy to learn....
Replayablility - 9  I've already done the demo 1.5 times....
AI - 7  This is where the game kinda sux...  the AI tries to rush you everytime you see them....  I still love playing it even thought this is how the AI is, but this is a demo i played so its not complete...  (like in the far cry demo, the Mercs used to crouch then stand and repeat to do it.  got the game, and never had the problem again)

Overall - 9 (averaged from my scores above)....

I love Quake 4!  I'll never be able to get it, parents dont want me playing shooting games (even though my dad let me get Far Cry)....  doesnt matter though, ill find a way to get it...
Well what do I do now?  Well Jack, you seem to have an act for blowing things up....

I know I'm getting Quake 4 as a Christmas present, thanks to annoying series of coincidences and my mum deciding to buy special offers at a bloody GAME store.  I have played the demo, though, and sadly it looks like unimaginative, generic pish based upon that.

Since this is a FEAR thread, and I just feel like comparing FEAR to Quake 4. In comparison to ZmaN's review;

Graphics - Pretty much same as Doom 3, looked like a lot of D3 textures were recycled and used in Q4. Overall the graphics quality was better than in D3, while the game ran more smoothly than D3. Graphics in FEAR are truly outstanding, wins Q4 hands down.

Sound - I'm getting mixed feelings here, some sounds sounded very good but overall it wasn't all that impressive. Overall quality of sounds in FEAR is better than in Q4, there were some good and bad samples in both though.

Gameplay - As long as you have played any recent first-person shooters, there's nothing to learn. Goes for both Q4 and FEAR. Q4 is your standard run-and-shoot game. FEAR goes with a more "realistic" approach where player cannot take all that much damage, and must use the slow-mo feature and some tactics. Although nothing new, the slow-mo feature fits to the game very well.

Replayability - I got very bored half-way through the game. At least it was an improvement over D3 where I got bored even sooner. At least FEAR kept my interest up all the way through, but don't expect FEAR to have good replay value either.

AI - The bottom line is that Q4 AI totally sucks. FEAR AI is the best first-person shooters have seen so far, that's not telling much but at least FEAR does have some AI unlike Q4.

And let me add one more category to this; Physics - In Q4 physics are nearly non-existant, which is sad. A barrel rolls down stairs but that's about it. When you shoot at Q4 monsters, the monster won't react in any way unless it's a death animation. FEAR on the other hand does have quite good physics and enemies react to wounds they get.

Summary:
Q4 does not add anything new to first-person shooters line, it improves slightly from D3 but that's all. The biggest complaints of FEAR gameplay wise are repetitive environments and enemies, but other than that, FEAR puts a new standard for all first-person shooters. Technically FEAR is better of the two, but the deciding factor is which game's gameplay you like more.

Good physics? My brother showed me something funny a few days ago, where a nailgunned guy got stuck in a railing in a strange way and did the usual shaking/vibrating dance thing. I love Havok. :D

Funny, I could have substituted Halo:CE in there if this were 4 years ago...

Hehe. That reminds me what happened ~3 days back. I threw a grenade at bunch of enemy soldiers, one of those soldiers lost his upper part of body, while the bottom half ended up partially through floor. After a while it started to make extremely odd noise while vibrating. :D Havok it is, but as far as first-person-shooters go, Havok's still got the best physics. Hopefully they will slowly get rid of those vibrating problems.

What's sad is that I am almost expecting the bodies to vibrate and make that noise in games these days, since it is so common in just about every modern game. Actually, on that point, here is something I did in Deus Ex Invisible War a few weeks ago:

http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/ragdoll1.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/ragdoll2.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/ragdoll3.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/ragdoll4.jpg

(and the pictures only tell half the story; the corpse was violently shaking all over the place and making that standard tapping noise :D)

I think Havok is way overrated, to be honest. The ragdoll thing screws up more often than it works. :p It does provide excellent entertainment, though. :D

Hey, I found this review from some guy that bought Quake 4 @ NewEgg and heres what he said

______________________________________________________________ __________

Pros: The graphics are amazing, especially the lighting effects. The storyline is good, the gameplay is creepy, the guns are awesome, and multiplayer is just different enough to keep things interesting

Cons: This isn't really a con, but it's something that may turn some people off, in the beginning: the enemies have a huge lack of any form of intelligence until after the big turning point in the game (you'll know when that is). It makes sense, and I really liked it, but I've read reviews that state that the AI is a big down point - it's not, it's just that the good AI doesn't show up until later.

Only actual con I can think of: Quake 2 is being problematic in linux, which doesn't bother me any. id wasn't the people who ported the Quake 2 version I'm using so I can't blame them.

Other Thoughts: An example of the AI: the special smart enemies hide behind things (no big surprise), stay at optimal range for their weapons (somewhat surprising, considering the AI was rated so bad), run away and try to find health when almost dead, and use explosive barrels to set traps (they once rolled one down some steps behind me and shot it when it got to the bottom, killing my whole squad).

______________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________

Apparently, the AI cranks its levels up as you progress through the game, so its not as bad as people think..
(i guess IGN and Gamespot didnt play the whole game through on the Luitenant Difficulty....

I WILL find a way to get Quake 4....
