I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and i get serious lag issues :(

I run a Celeron D 320 2.4ghz, 1024mb DDR400 Windows 2000 pro corperate edition and a GeForce 6200!

Lag just plagues my game

Soon to be replacing 6200 with a Radeon 9800 pro.

Anyway can anyone help?

If you're using the media.vp files try running without mv_adveffects.vp. Also turn off the use 32 bit textures option in the launcher as it's a real memory hog.

You are using the SCP, right?

The game would not be lagging if running vanilla, so that may have been a stupid question...

Perfectly reasonable I'd say. I merely assumed he had FS2_Open but you could have asked something quite important :)

not everyone has the SCP (me)

Maybe you don't have enough memory. Try closing other opened applications before you run FS2. If there are no other opened apps, I'm stumped.

How could you be getting lag with Vanilla FS2? Is your computer ten years old?

Maybe it's that multithreading problem? Then  again, I don't think the Celeron D's are multicore...

IIRC Celeron D is a stripped down Pentium D, which is multicore, no?

I immediately thought of multicore problems but on seeing that it was a Celeron I assumed that couldn't be the cause.

Simple to test though. Check my second post on this thread. If you don't have a processor affinity option in task manager then that's not the problem! :)

According to wp probably not.

If the original poster is using SCP, command line options and what VPs or mods you are using would be very nice to know. Plus, do you have anti-aliasing/multisampling on? That can absolutely murder your framerate.

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
Nah i use the original freespace 2. Downloaded all 3 iso's and installed.

No my processor isnt multicored unfortunatly :(

I might upgrade to windows XP soon to see if that is the problem

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
It shouldn't be; other than some wierd afterburner issues with windows 2000, it should out-perform windows XP in this and most other applications.  In fact, that machine should be able to handle most of the features of FSO pretty nicely too.

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
Sounds like a memory/page file thing? I've found you need a fair amount of swapping space for FSO to run, and if you have too many textures chucked into memory at once it can really punish the system. I'd taking out the new VP's if you are using them, start with the adv_effects.vp, just move them outside the Freespace folder entirely and see if it makes a difference.
Secondly, make sure you don't have pcx32 selected in your launcher commandline, that slows things down unbearably on my card. Finally, try turning off EAX, I know it's odd, but I've been hearing some horror stories regarding the memory and processor footprint of EAX stuff.

Honestly that has nothing to do with it.  SCP has a standard setting called "Vanilla FS2" which turns of all of the extra features. Don't install any of the fancy things and let it do its thing. BUT...turn HT&L on if you've got a video card that is anything better than a GeForce 2.

What you're probably trying to do is install all of the fancy graphics features which aren't going to work.  But SCP is going to run better with the optimizations made.  Particularly HT&L (most video cards have HT&L on them, its not new anymore) is going to bump your FPS from about 25-30 to 60-70.

I've got a PII 233 in my basement that runs SCP better than retail FS2.

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
*Points at Celeron*

Sorry, but Celeron's aren't really built for games (built for more like Word Processing or ect).

Celerons, well, lets just say you shouldnt expect to run ANY game on it well, espeically if it is 3D based from my experience.

But 5-6 FPS does seem abit low, on vannilla FS2 from the year 2000, I expect you should ATLEAST get 10 (which still doesnt cut it).

Well, the solution is easy, replace your Celeron.

Unfortunatly, from what I have seen, Celerons are really only featured on Dells/HP's/ect (aka any company that makes computers.  Always the "cheap" computers that PC companies sell seem to use Celerons), and if that is true, you will probilby have to buy a whole new computer (or all the parts that need to be replaced to support your new processor, AKA ususally means a whole new computer).

Big name PC companies tend to make it so its hard to upgrade thier computers, which is why I doubt you can just buy a new processor (assuming your computer is a Dell or somthing else like that).

I could find a link to a $172 AMD 2700+ full PC that i found on a website if you want, which will run FS2 at amazing speeds (but wont cut the cake on modern, high detailed games, unless you upgrade it.  Even if you upgrade it to the max that it's motherboard supports, you still wont find yourself playing modern-day games at max possible speeds.  Buts it great for a general-games computer).  The only problems is that it only has 128MB of RAM (i belive you can just use your computer's RAM and put it into the new one), no video card (same for above, just see if your VC and put it in the new computer), and it runs Linspire (aka a crappy O/S that you can download for free).  So, if you buy/get new RAM, a video card (such as the one you have now), and Windows plus a HD to put it on, then it will win FS2 (and many other games) excelently enough.

So, your problem is your Processor IMO.  Celerons suck, for pretty much anything except general web browsing and word processing.

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
I very much doubt it's the Celeron which is directly to blame. Poor as it may be the retail requirements are for a pentium running about 10 times slower than that Celeron does. With that many CPU cycles it ought to be able to make up for the basic crappiness of the CPU.

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
Sounds a bit like page-swapping to me, though I'm surprised if that's going on with 1 gigamem :(

Re: I finaly got FreeSpace 2 and...
a few pretty detailed questions for you so i can assist u in solving ur problem:

what version of DirectX do you have installed?
What applications (or how many) boot up with ur PC?
what speed is ur ram? PC133? PC2700?
which graphics drivers are you currently using?
are you able to alt+tab out of fs2 while its running without it crashing your computer?
What is the model # of ur CPU?
What manufacturer is ur pc from and what is its model #?
what is your current page file (virtual memory) size?

and remember, if you have integrated graphics on that machine BE SURE AND HAVE IT TURENED OFF in the BIOS.

@ about celerons. Celeron Ds are not dual core. its just intels new processor line naming scheme.

Celerons are notorious for causing system bottlenecks. These bottlenecks include bus speed limitations and a small cache sizes. Some of the early Celeron D models based on the old northwood core have absolutely ****TY 3dnow and floating point calculation abilities. His processor speed is more than sufficient to run vanilla fs2 but something is seriously bottlenecking ur comp. ur celeron is having trouble keeping up with your graphics card most likely IMO.
