I wasn't really sure where to post this, and I hope I'm not intruding, but I've got a suggestion for the Vasudan ships. It seems to me that since the Vasudan architecture is very organic, the textures on the ships should reflect that. For example (this was a really quick photoshop):

What I've done here is take some basic organic textures of honeycomb and some scales and multiply them over the originals. I think it adds a level of detail and realism that is lost in higher resolutions.

Wow. Now, that IS a nice touch....I would actually like to see that in-game before offering a definitive judgement, but you have me sold on the idea.

I would want to see a small amount of normal mapping on the organic areas too, adding depth to the honeycomb and the scales.  Not saying yours should, since it was just a photo shop.

IMHO that detail would look nice on the shine map, with the diffuse map honeycomb being very very light.

agreed. It's the subtle features that often give a skin that bit of polish that makes it awesome.

Please no more damn biotech! Why can't the Vasudans sculpt metal to look curvy? By your logic, this should be organic:

But guess what, it's made of steel!

The tan parts that you honeycombed look more like sails than scales anyway. Vasudan technology has always been depicted as being similar to Terran technology, and many of the FS1 Vasudan ships (Osiris, Amun, Bes, Typhon, etc.) are obviously completely artificial. They're not using magical biotech, they just have less utilitarian design principles? Why give their ships veins and honeycombs?

  • These words make the page load that much slower.
IMO, it doesn't matter whether it's biotech or not, it adds some much-needed surface detail to the ship.
Interestingly enough, this signature is none of the following:
A witty remark on whatever sad state of affairs the world may or may not be in
A series of localized forum in-jokes
A clever and self-referential comment on the nature of signatures themselves.

Don't you remember the inside of the Vasudan ship when you get transferred? It is extremely organic looking.

I hate the idea that Vasudans have biotech. I mean that's painfully stereotypical and, IMO, stupid. I mean look at all the ships. All of them look organic and first glance, but when you look deeper, you do see mechanical pieces and stuff. Vasudans do not use organic technology. They just cover it up for aesthetics. I'd give some examples if I could but I'm not at my computer right now.

However, giving the illusion that the Vasudans were trying to make their ships look organic is a brilliant idea, and IMO, very Vasudan.

This must be biotech. Looks like an animal.

EDIT: I do think the scales on the top look kind of cool myself, however the texture on the lighter brown outside area just doesn't fit. The scales can sort of pass for pretty looking armor, the honeycomb not so much.

Even the honeycomb doesn't necessarily have to be biotech.  Maybe the paint-job team was feeling creative.

(And I can't say I ever expected to see Kuroneko-sama show up in a normal maps thread. :p)

The scales were badass, but I agree the honeycombs weren't great.
