Screwy File Counting? (Computer Problem Related)
Greetings all.

I'm having what might be a problem - or might be a misunderstanding - with my computer.

I just finished copying over my music collection to my computer for use with my new Walkman. Explorer reports that there are 2239 Files, 176 Folders in the directory where this music is stored. Presumably then there are 2063 music tracks - as I have nothing else stored in the directory.

If I ask Winamp to load the entire directory into a playlist it lists 1619 tracks.

Windows Media Player says the same thing...

If I ask Connect (the required software to move music over to the Walkman) to load the entire directory into a playlist it lists 1621 tracks.

Something obviously seems to be amiss. I want to be sure that I'm copying over all the music I want to listen to so I need to be sure by the numbers. Short of going through and manually verifying each song (something I really don't want to do each time).. Why are there such large gaps between the numbers? There's nothing else hidden in there so my only guess was that the album images are what's throwing things off.

Does anyone else have any experience with this?

Re: Screwy File Counting? (Computer Problem Relate
I would imagine its because WinAmp, WMP or Connect does not recognize all media file types and thus does not load these unrecognized files to playlist.

Get foobar special download, the special includes all additional plugins. It should be able to recognize, load and play any audio file you can throw at it.

either that or try "sort by file type" and see how many files are WMP or MP3's

They're all MP3.

I ripped them all over the last couple of days using Windows Media Player and setting it to 192 quality. They should all be of an identical type.

now that is thoroughly wierd..
trying it out in iTunes, i've come across the same thing

folder full of mp3's, nothing else 277 files in folder, 271 in itunes, double-checked by selecting all of them, 272 files..

I looked for hidden files - nothing to be seen anywhere.

WinAmp's not exactly renouned for it's ability to list files accurately.

It started ****ing with me one night and I ended up with entire albums being duplicated for no apparent reason on the playlist. It missed some ****, added alot of **** twice - basically decided to be a dick for about 8hrs.

That's just it though... there are only .MP3 files in each folder. I've looked.

And if Winamp can't count then neither can any of the other bits of software either. How else could you explain the difference in numbers?

Can you figure out what files are missing, and if Winamp can open them normally?

That's just it... I haven't work out if/what is missing yet. So far everything seems to be there.. but then that still doesn't explain the difference!

Re: Screwy File Counting? (Computer Problem Related)
If you have Active Directory indexing enabled on your system, the folders will contain a link file that is a quick reference for the MBR.  You will not be able to see it, but the file is there.  Also sometimes Explorer considers [.] and [..] as files if you're looking thru a bunch of folders.
