Teen Does Really Stupid Thing
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/01/teen.iraq/index.html

I can't believe there hasn't been a thread about this yet... I can't fathom for a second what this kid was thinking. I mean, this is truly the height of stupidity.

Ooops, someones going to be grilled in a moderate oven when they get home...

In a way, I do sort of respect him feeling guilty for living in a luxury while others are suffering, but toddling off to Iraq like that, he's very lucky to still be alive.

If he was willing to go into unstable parts of Iraq to see an uncensored view of the current functionality of society, then good for him.

Re: Teen Does Really Stupid Thing
Somebody posted this over at SB.com, so i'll just re-iterate what I posted there.

This kid wasn't stupid in the sense, he followed his goals and ambitions, and unlike his peers, sought an unbiased view of the events going on in Iraq - i.e., the Truth. Such a goal is never a bad thing, as it shows willingness to learn and to follow one's passion through.

However, the way he did it practically reeks of stupidity, idiocy, teenage arrogance and impatience. Not to mention the lack of concern for his family should anything happen to him.

On the other hand I would not have cared if my family objected to me coming here.

On the one hand, it's really dumb - walking into a foreign country, with no knowledge of the language, when you pretty much know that fighting's been there.

On the other hand, I don't see much better wait to get an up close and personal, uncensored, view of the situation. Besides joining the US Army.

He did what 95% of journalists don't have the balls to: walk to streets of Bahgdad in order to put his money where his mouth us. Stupid, yes. Admirable? Extremely.

So? Next headline: Water is wet.

Still, the kid's intentions are admirable, though the way he carried it out may have been less than intelligent.
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

There was supposed to be a bit of irony there...

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think that the kid's intentions were awesome. But I mean... I can't think of too many easier ways to get kidnapped.

Re: Teen Does Really Stupid Thing
[q]If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000. The rate in Washington D.C. (among others) is 80.6 per 100,000. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington D.C.[/q]

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

the only punishment that kid got was his visa taken away from him. HIS FRIGGIN' VISA.

grandma says if that was her kid he'd much worse.

Re: Teen Does Really Stupid Thing
He's Arabic. If the stupid News Networks woulda  shut up and stopped saying stuff like "OMG THIS KID IS AMERICAN, ALONE, AND IN IRAQ" and stopped showing everyone his pictures, he woulda been fine. After spending a little time in Iraq he'd probly pick up the basics of the language, and he looked Arabic, so he would blend in perfectly. He would've been fine. Unless of course he is COMPLETELY stupid and tells everybody (in english) that he's alone and from America. *stoppes talking to breath*

It takes more than a week to pick up the basics of a different language. Plus he would still have an american accent.
