If I were Mike Kulas, this is what I'd be doing.
I'd be looking at the SCP, and I'd be saying "That's pretty cool."

And then I'd think to myself "If a bunch of amateur programmers, spread across the globe, working in their spare time can do that in four years, I could probably pay a couple of programmers to work eight hour days and make similar improvements in 6 months or so."

And then I'd think to myself "Time magazine just voted Battlestar Galactica" the best show on TV, and they don't have a PC game."

Then I'd be ringing up the Sci-Fi channel and trying to get a deal going.

Think about it. Look at what the BSG mod team have done with screencaps and a few zoic renders? Any company making an official game would have access to the original CGI models and textures used in the show. They'd probably have to remodel them to drop the polies to something reasonable, but the texs would be right there, ready to be used (though again, they'd probably need to be optimized a ****load). Plus they never have to mess around designing ships, or paying anyone to do the concept art. Plus they'd have access to the people who do the music for the show, and the SFX, meaning their budget here would be minimal...

Think about it - 6 months to update the engine, during which time you can have modellers working on making lower poly meshes from Zoic's high poly stuff, another 6-12 months for missions and beta testing and whathaveyou, and you have a space sime companion to the best new sci fi show in years, built on the gameplay of the engine that powered the best Space Sim ever. Instant winner, and easy money.

Actually, there is a BSG game, or it was in development anyway, I don't know what became of it. Though as I remember it, it was some console arcade shooter thingy.

Yeah, for PS2 (possibly others, I dunno). But it was never ported to PC, and it's not set in the series timeline, but 40 years before it, and using a lot of TOS elements. This would be a PC game using solely new series stuff.

I may be wrong, but I think the FX studios generally keep the rights to all the models and works they produce, then simply license them to the TV studios for broadcast.

The FX people won't own the design rights, but they'll own those specific models. So you could copy them, but you'd need their go-ahead to use the original models for anything.

Not a bad idea...

We're starting to see a resurgence of SciFi shows...the major networks are showing TV series now like Lost, Invasion, and a few others (the one with the underwater creature) that contain many sci-fi elements that are branded as primetime general interest TV shows.  The interesting thing for me is that in the last 10 years technology has jumped so quickly that things considered geeky sci-fi nerdy stuff are now considered household items.  People don't even think of it anymore...

So there may be hope that this resurgance will in-turn create a new market for the oldtime sci-fi based space combat games.  There are a few franchies that I'd like to see ressurected.  Wing Commander, TIE Fighter, and FreeSpace...imagine the solid gameplay that made those three so incredibly good combined with what is possible these days with physics, AI, and graphics.

The only reason sci-fi series are making a comeback is because they allow the whole 'traitor within' thing to be played out in a devious and convincing manner that would just look stupid in a spy series.

Show me one new sci-fi series that doesn't revolve around powerful beings manipulating events and ****ing with the main characters.

So what you're saying is that sci-fi has all been playing into our fears and feeling of Big Brother?
